I'm interested in braiding my hair, but I've got a few questions.
-How long hair do you need to braid?
My guess is that I'm almost there but the longer the better.
-How do you divide your hair into three equal strands?
I've got a lot of problem with this one.
-How do you braid you own hair?
My fingers get tied up :p I can braid the hair of someone else but my own hair is a whole different story.
You're probably there ;)
Personally, I proceed slowly. The two side-strand are on my chest, while the center is on my back. This I can evalue the size of each strand. Proceed with a mirror, if it's help you.
Training is the key ! For me, it came with practice.
I think I did my first braid when my hair was shorter than yours. It just takes practice. If you're watching TV or just relaxing, try using that time to get your fingers used to the movements.
Might I suggest watching the video I made of me braiding my hair? It's in the links section.
Hey Vincent,
The length you can braid it depends on your thickness, I think. I found it a LOT easier to braid half my hair than all of it. That's how I started out. I did it in front of a mirror and brought half of my hair in front of my shoulders to see what I was doing. Also, instead of the regular English braid (right over middle, left over middle), I just naturally did it the opposite way (right UNDER middle, left UNDER middle). I don't know why but I still can't do an English braid, only the opposite.
It took me a couple of weeks to be able to do it easily and quickly. Just practice without using all of your hair, and soon enough you'll be able to stick all of your hair in it. :)

Start by practicing on the double braids first. The reason why is because you can see exactly what your doing (either right or wrong) Where the single braid in the back you are doing blindly. Being able to see what your doing will answer all those questions. Braiding your own puts you in a different perspective that when doing someone elses. You have to get used to that perspective.

After you get a pretty good feel for it then try the single in the back, You'll still be doing it blindly, but you'll have the perspective now and it shouldn't be overly difficult.

I agree with the other guys. I start experimenting with a small braid, just in front of my ear - the temple hair. Then for fun I did a few more in different spots on my head. I then went for the back, awkward at first but now I'm better at it. It takes a couple of minutes for my brain messages to get down to my finger tips so I always proceed at half or quarter speed. If I try to rush, chaos ensues! Of course I havent had a public showing yet, that's the next step.
Good luck Vincent,
Bruce
My hair is only about 5 inches long yet, and I've also made some braids in front of my ears. Regardless of if your hair is too short to put it all in a braid in the back, I agree to start braiding where you can see it as practice.
Thanks everybody, guess I will have to practice a lot :)
To be continued.
I braid my hair pretty often. I just divide it into three and bring each side alternately into the middle until it's done. Of course I can't see what I'm doing, but practice makes perfect. It's important not to start with tangled hair, though. Comb it through first.
That can be a problem I only untangle my hair in the shower.
But I can always braid my hair after I'm done with my shower.
Thanks for the advise.
