First time poster here. Quickly I want to say that I love the board. You guys have some great advice and you all seem to be extrordinarilly educated about all things hair. I will post a pic soon. My story... I'm in the process of growing my hair out for the first time. I'm in my late 20's. My goal is mid back to waist length hair. I would like to be able to style it in updo's from time to time. My question is... have any of you used an updo before? If so, generally how long do they usually take. Anyone have any good websites that show guys wearing updo's, so maybe I can get an idea of what I'm getting myself into. I'm not looking to go super fancy on this one, but something that will stick out. Thanks guys (and ladies!) Thank you all for inspiring me!! Hope to hear back.
Brook
What on earth in the world of men's long hair is an "updo"? I assume that this refers to some style where you create some sort of bird's next rather than a tail or bun?
I'm assuming you mean something along the lines of a 1960's beehive. I would echo Johns comment your best bet is the LHC.
Not too many do "updos" at least that I'm aware of.

Not really sure, myself, but apparently these are pictures of the beasts.

Hi Brook,
Why don't you ask the question in the Long hair Community as i'm sure you will get some great advice there. We have a few members of our community that post there as well.
Cheers,
John.B
I can't help you with that updo question Brook but I would like to welcome you to the board.

Some of these guys should loosen up. I use a plastic clip to keep it wound up in the back on hot days around the house. I would think a lot of the guys here do, too. I suppose I've been a bit inhibited about going out with it up, but I don't see why we shouldn't. There used to be a guy named Jarko who'd post on this board and linked to some shots of his in several updos. He said he went out that way all the time. I've always thought a french twist style would be a neat way go in warm weather, but I've never been managed to do one that didn't look goofy or fall apart.
There used to be someone from Russia that used to post pictures
of updos here but I can't remember his name. Maybe someone else
who has been around here a long time can.
I usually only do my hair in a braid or bun myself. There's a lady called Torin who posts excellent tutorials on YouTube that I follow. She even tried a braid that I suggested which worked out quite well.
Her videos taught me how to do a rope braid - which I now use all the time.

Look for a post called "My first buns" from GlassEyes, farther down in the list.
Hmmm. Bandanas. I use a bandana when I need to keep my hair out of my face (Still can't get the front in a tail yet. But lately I have been using a tail in the back and a bandana.
I do not generaly do updo's because most of the styles are typical on women...not that thats a bad thing, just does not go with my style is all.
I think 'updo' is almost a gender specific word in itself. Mostly it means a bun, but there are a few things that fit that aren't really buns, like a French twist. Some guys wear a simple bun, but I think there's still a stigma that it's feminine, even though really it's just another option that comes with having long hair.
I have practiced putting my hair into a bun, and can defnitely do it, but my issue is what to fix it in place with that wouldn't look too girly? It's kind of a circular problem, because, for example, there isn't anything inherently feminine about just using a plain butterfly clip, but they are only seen on girls because guys don't wear buns, and so it goes. Maybe only 2% of guys even have hair long enough to even do it to begin with, which only makes the problem worse.
Still, it would be nice to get the hair off my neck when it's eighty degrees F and eighty % humidity, but I just can't bring myself to do it ... yet. The received wisdom is that the correct solution is to cut all the hair off, but like most received wisdom there's nothing wise about it.
OTOH, things have improved vastly from the days when guys didn't even wear ponytails because it was perceived as too girly, which I'm sure many of you can't even remember. Back then, a bandana was the only approved 'masculine' way to restrain hair. Well, either that or a hat.
