Hey y'all,
does anyone think that long hair is easier to manage than short hair, at least in terms of styling. Brushing takes like one minute max, putting hair into ponytail 15 seconds....whereas short hair requires constant styling with gel..etc to hold in place...
The only real time zapper is the washing and drying, but I think most people exaggerate the amount of maintenance needed for long hair, what do you guys think?
Dear Ken,
What you say is probably true for long hair being easier to style, and manage then short hair, however the transitional awkward stage is in my experience more work keeping hair restrained and under control then with having previously short hair, and when the great milestone arrives that all of it can be restrained in a ponytail. When I had short hair I never needed to use gel or oiling until it got in my eyes in the early growing out phase.
It's always a pleasure reading your entertaining posts. Hope your keeping well and enjoying the Northern summertime sunshine.

I'm inclined to agree. The transitional stage was a bitch, even with your styling products (had a calick from Hedes). But
now I shower, run the brush through (takes 5-min's because of
tangles & what-not) and I'm out the door.
Pony-tails for me are for windy days or when I'm really hot. Otherwise, my hair's down even at work.

I agree. Although washing and drying take longer, I only do that once or twice a week. Since I started doing a simple two strand rope braid, my hair doesn't get tangled much either. So, long hair isn't necessarily high maintenance, unless one wants to make it so.
David
Since you're talking about braids, I'm assuming yours is just a tad longer than your avatar pic?
Hi!
Yes, the avatar pic is pretty old. The end of my braided ponytail reaches a point just below my shoulder blades when I am standing.
David
It does seem like once you can tie it back, it's pretty much fire-and-forget.
...terminal length happens to be awkward stage length......
sigh
Depends on the hair type you have I think. I have friends with long curly hair, which he suggests requires much work...and I have seen his routine and it is pretty crazy.
Mine is leaving the awkword stage, but because it's wavy and thick and course (Sometimes dryish) I find Im using more prodects to tame my Fish tail!?! Where the back of my hair falls on my shoulders and I sort of have a...I dunno what to call it other than a flip. (Think Stepford wives meets Eddy Vedder)
So I guess it just depends on what hair type you have.
I have that too! Right where the hair sits on my shoulders. I'm hoping it won't flip out so much when it's longer, but my hair has tended to curl toward the end at every length so far.
Chris
I have tons of fishtails too on the back! But that's cause my hair sits on the shoulders...it should stop after few months.
Chris
You and I seem to have very similar hair types and style. So yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It gets to a certain length and then...Kapow! Just seems to flip somewhere.
Thanks for sharing

I'm finding that my curly hair is getting easier as it grows out, even during the awkward stage. It had a mind of it's own at several inches length, now that I am reaching six inches however I find it is getting easier. All I do is comb it back while wet then leave it alone until it is dry and use a boar hair brush to part it, I even only water wash it.
Of course there are many different types of curly hair, so I can definitely see how it could be a hassle to take care of.
To be sincere here, I'd have to disagree with you. I think that long hair requires MUCH more care and attention than short. I know for myself. My hair is barely touching shoulders, is wavy and thick and I need to wash it every day in order to keep it from greasiness and also comb it frequently because it easily turns tangled and chaotic. That is why I've always considered straight hair a blessing, and curly/wavy a misfortune. Luckily, it's only for the sake of my love for having long hair that I persist growing it, otherwise I'd cut it.
That happens to me too and that's just like i said:
Medium lenght hair requires a lot of maintaining.
When our hair will be longer we'll stop having troubles.
I think it depends...short hair if buzzed and is 1 cm doesnt require any maintain at all! But if longer than that it starts needing more.
But it's also true, long hair doesnt require that much maintain except drying it and combing it. Expecially if you tie it in a ponytail. :)
However i prefer long hair and that's why I'll keep growing!!!
Medium lenght hair is so hard to maintain,i think. I hate the way my hair is currently.
Another time saving factor is hair cuts. I don't get them! So I save both time and money.
I still get the occasional trim for split ends and such, but once every 6-9 months as opposed to once every 7-10 days is still a major savings.
": I still get the occasional trim for split ends and such, but once every 6-9 months as opposed to once every 7-10 days is still a major savings."
As long as it's not once every three months as I used to do, you're on good way.
I binned by 12 week standing appointment!
It's more hassle than a buzz cut, but a lot less hassle than any length in between. I braid mine most mornings and leave it like that till next morning. It takes about a minute to brush through and then a couple of minutes to rebraid. I wash it on average every four to five days, which takes maybe an extra five minutes on top of my normal shower routine, so I'd definitely agree that it's easier to maintain - but then I have only slightly wavy hair.
When I had short hair, it took me only 5min to wash it and I was done. Styling it was under 1 min work so that was easy too.
Now my hair is long it takes me between 30 and 60min to shower depending on which routine I choose. I have a long (60min) routine once a week and the other showers are the 30min ones.
When my hair doesn't need a wash I have a shower cap and my shower only takes 5min like it used too.
I only comb and untangle my hair in the shower so after that it doesn't cost me any extra time. I only put in a ponytail once in a while and that's it.
So it takes me about 1,5-2 hours extra to maintain, which is the only downside about having long hair. But in a few years time I won't know any better so than that's not an issue anymore.
And besides that it's worth the time it put in!
Until it got to my shoulder blades, it was constantly tangled. Once I cleared that hurdle, it suddenly got much easier. I think the extra weight keeps it from whipping around as much.
Hi there,
I have to say longhair is easier to maintain with in a ponytail, braided, bun or just loose. Finger combing and brushing does not that that long either. I'm bought on the idea!
Cheers,
John.B
I think longhair is much easier. In fact that was my first post here on the board.
Some longhairs do spend a lot of time on their hair. I think it's mostly a choice. I spend a bit more time now than I did but not much.

Longhair is easy

Haircuts are costly. 15 of them a year at $15 each is $225 per year. By not getting my hair cut since 1992, I have saved thousands of dollars.
Washing and drying over 3 feet of hair is a 2 to 3 hour project. An interesting note: I use maybe a tablespoon of shampoo to do the washing. I wash in small increments to save on shampoo. (Lather rinse repeat several times working my way down the length of my hair.)

Oh, I agree completely, but it probably depends on your hair type. I have fine, thin, wavy hair (thin hair all my life, not thinning, LOL!). I like the extra weight I get from the length. When it was short it would never lay right, it was always out of control. This was decades ago (!), but I used to put something called Vitalis on it or even just run water on it before combing it.
I'm such an old codger that this was before hair gel was invented. No, really, I'm not putting you on when I say that, I remember when hair gel first came out, but my hair was quite long by then.
I think Vitalis was mainly alcohol, so it was nothing more than a way of getting your hair wet to style it, but the point was that it dried out quicker than if you used water. Before gel, the other choices were either grease, which wasn't especially different from anything you'd use on a car axle, or Brylcreem. I'm not sure what was in Brylcreem atall, but I didn't fancy getting it in my hair.
For me, its actually a lot easier to manage long hair than short. My hairs pretty wavy/curly naturally and when I had it short it took awhile to get it to look neat. (Really need to get a better pic sometime)
Now that its long I just spend 2-3 minutes combing it and I'm done. Of course it still adds a few minutes to my shower & the time it takes to let it dry but its worth it.
I agree, it takes no effort at all, when i had short hair I was making sure it looking good every other minute, now with long hair I never check... inless there is something sticky init.
even if long hair was a hassel, it is worth it, it makes you so much more Elete than every one else
