This is something I need to know. Trying not to post to much, but one thing that I would love to know is how to keep cool. I mean heatwise. My hair is thick and dark and seems to trap heat.
I always seem to be sweating on my face, and neck.
Is there a way to beat the heat, cause I feel like I am melting.
I know it might sound silly but how about you just tie your hair in a ponytail? It helps me to stay fresh...
Not at that length yet. Im just above the shoulders, and the hair just barely tucks behind my ears, otherwise Id be all over that.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Thats what Ill be doing when it's longer
Alice band is very good at keeping your hair back.
over summer I tucked mine up in a basketball cap to keep it off my neck - or I put it into a couple pig-tails at home - looks silly, but keeps you sane :).
Believe it or not but long hair soaked with sweat keeps you cooler than if you have a buzzcut where the sweat justs evaporates
away with no cooling value.
Have you noticed how people that live in deserts cover thier
bodies with clothing? Clothing that is soaked with sweat will
keep you cooler than these nitwits that run around in the
heat with just shorts. Of course showers and laundry are
advisable if you want any body to come near you after a day or
two.
This is what I thought. Seems though that I only sweat on my face, my hair remains dry and hot. I usually lift sections of it up to let the heat out of my hair. I have taken to wetting my hair to simulate sweat, and it's only if my hair is damp that it's cooler.
I think I may go back to my hat for a little just to beat some of the heat.
Thanks uch to everyone for their suggestions. I have an old Alice Band, so Ill give that a whirl.
Thanks
Doug
MG,
Got to disagree with that. It's not the presence of water as such, but the evaporation that cools the skin. Sweat that emerges at body temperature and sits there, does nothing to cool you until it evaporates.
Which is not to say that you might not still be cooler in direct sunlight, due to the radiant heat hitting the hair rather than the skin.

That's probably the major downside of having long hair, especially when it's not quite long enough to tie back. The trouble is hair's very good at trapping heat, so to keep cool, you have to minimise the amount of air it holds. You could try gel or hats. Another option when your hair gets long enough is a half tail, which should keep the hair on top of your head fairly close to your scalp. You could also try hair clips or an alice band. I actually used to braid mine into corn rows, which worked quite well. You just have to be sure not to make them too tight or you risk damaging your hair. It's easier to get someone else to do them though as it's murder on the arms if you do it yourself as it takes quite a long time and you can't really see what you're doing so the results can be variable!
Try putting your hair up in a bun. It takes it off the neck, which is the primary culprit for heat.
Maybe you could stick your head under a faucet? It would be short lived, but it could help for the hottest parts of the day...
