This might sound a bit odd, but my hair is going on seven months now, and is longer in the back than the front. Besides mulletaphobia, I notice that the strands in back tend to bunch curve, giving it a bell-like shape. Doesn't really bother me, but is using a straightener my only option if I want to kill the curves?
And also, to avoid the dreaded mullet look, is it advisable to trim the hair in back? I don't really want to get a cut, but I'm curious as to what's best.
Get a round brush to help the curves, use an oil based hair product (I used Loreal Dirty Clean and only a little) and apply to the bell shape. It will help control it.
I know some people might rake me over the coals here, but I do subscribe to the thoughts, that
1) if you are going to hate how your hair looks, you will just get frustrated and cut it.
2) To start with a style (That does mean a cut) which will limit the awkward stage. Yes by cutting it, you will be lengthening the awk stage, but when it grows, it will grow even and more how you pictured it if you start with a good cut and healthy hair.
I have the same thing happening. I went from a completely shaved head. The back of your hair is going to seem like it's longer, when in fact it's not. It's just lower on the scalp which means it will give the illusion of a mullet, even though it's the same length.
I did, cut the back when I was growing mine out, so that my bangs or sides of my hair had a chance to appear longer. The result was it looking even.
On the otherside though, I did regret cutting because It did lengthen the Awk Stage. Lengthened yes! But it looked nicer to me and it made the stage stylish or less Awk
I agree with the first point: My hair is very straight, except for the ends which are like Tony's. At first it bugged me, but then I looked round, noticed it in others and figured, it's my hair, I'll choose to like it however it is.
And similarly, I 'started off', as it were, with an almost skin-head, though didn't cut it to even it out. And yes, it looked horrible (in my opinion) in the awkward phase, but now I'm thrilled it reaches so far to the ground! And, I'm noticing the ends are starting to straighten out on their own, thanks to gravity, I guess.
It's easy(ish) to avoid the mullet look - comb your hair differently. When I started out, I combed my hair back and held it in place with gell or mousse. You could part it to the side, part it to the middle and adopt a head-band ....

I hated the dippity-do look!
(15 months)
Dippity-do - GONE! I did nothing but just wait.
(9 months later... )
Hey looks really great Bruce, whole lotta hair there! You've got a great look there, congratulations on such fine progress :)
WOW. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting these pics! I am (hopefully) beginning to exit the bell-curve and my hair has looked just like your "Exhibit A". It's so great to see that, yes, it will end on its own.

Looking good Bruce. Once your hair is well past shoulder length it will straighten out on its own. Happy growing.

Hi Bruce. That's an impressive update and to think it actually wasn't meant to be one.At least not an official one.LOL.Your hair looks outstanding as you have to be pleased with the results so far.Have to admit even your dippity-do looked cool:)

Looks good Bruce. A fine example of just being patient and letting the hair sort itself out.
Kevin
Thanks guys!
I didn't want to suggest that this was an update (this picture is from the fall 2007), but I thought I could illustrate how patience can pay off in just a short time.
I'll do a for real update soon. It's been somewhat nuts around here.
