So in mid-december of 08 I shaved my head to the scalp which was my usual hair cut. I am now 6 months in with no trims and have about 3.5 inches of growth and I'm going to keep going. The reason? My daughter bet me 50.00 that I wouldn't cut my hair for a year. Not one to back down from a bet, well here I am. I don't plan on stopping when December rolls around either. Anyway I bookmarked this for future updates and once the year is up, the before and after pic.
Awesome, I'm a newbie as well. 8 month's now into it from shaved to skin. Having curly hair has made this whole time an awkward stage. Coming here has really made helped me through this period.
May your strands grow like a weed, and your awkward stage be short.
Good on you for kicking the haircut habit! I figure when the 12 month marks comes up in December when your girl pays up the $50 that you also would have saved $50 in hairshop barber fees too.
Also the bet was probably her subtle way of saying that she prefers you with longish hair. Long hair also keeps one warmer in winter too.

Sorry to speak up on behalf of any other possible skeptics here; but, my guess is that if you are truly, "not one to back down from a bet", then my guess is that a year or so from now, if someone else in your family bets you $50 that you wouldn't shave it all off, that you will.
It's fun to hear about someone deciding to grow thier hair long simply because of some crazy bet! However, to see someone KEEP their hair long, --- especially if they continue to let it grow year after year after year after year... Well, let's just say that this accomplishment usually only happens out of of a less shallow reason for motivation, --- as well as requires of oneself a totally different kind of commitment. I'm not trying to be mean-spirited here; just that I've seen a lot of temporary longhairs come and go (including "grow & shave")...
So, just for fun, here's my counter-bet: I bet that you'll never make it to 2 years without giving in to someone else's bet encouraging you to cut it all off. I have no $$ to give you if you win; but, I will say a very enthusiastic & well-deserved CONGRATS if you prove me wrong! (And I love love LOVE to be proved wrong!!)
And, here's one more longhair landmark I'll bet for sure you'll never even remotely make it to: I bet you'll never in a million years reach the 3-year mark of growing your hair out.... if you do, I'll eat whatever kind of humble pie you wish to bake me!!!)
Good luck!
- Ken in San Francisco
PS - Yum yum, humble pie, --- right in my eye!!
[snip]
Let's see, 3 years of growth, a million years to try, that gives him 333,333 tries. Are you still liking your odds, Ken?
Couldn't resist,
Chris
PS - I agree with the overall message of your post.
Is this just bet or are you really going ahead with it. Watch this space viewers :-)!
I'll put a fiver down......
Well, whatever the reason I'm always glad to hear from someone growing out their hair for the first time.
I do hope you like it when the year is up, maybe you'll keep it.
Personally I think they are way too many buzz cuts and shaved heads today. It's way too common. Another thing is a shaved head is a lot of maintenance. The ones I know have to shave their heads every morning! Wow! That's a lot of shaving. My hair is nowhere that much maintenance! Lol
Getting used to longhair does take some doing but after you get used to it it's weird to not have it.
Good luck and I hope you win!

Yes there are, and I speak from experience as one of those guys who used to "bic" their head, you sure do go through a lot of razors. Especially if you have sensitive skin like myself and have to get the more expensive razors and shaving gel. Too much maintenance, too much sun, and too much wasted money!!!
Actually I mis-communicated the bet. She bet that I wouldn't cut my hair for a year or I'd pay her 50.00 If I don't cut it I don't win anything just long hair. I'm a drummer/singer so long hair won't look bad on me. Now if I can just get rid of this eczema or w/e is on my scalp.
