Hi guys, recently the ends of my hair especially have been getting quite dry. I'm guessing this could be down to a few factors, such as the weather (we're actually getting some sun here in England!) the fact that I straighten it once or twice a week, or maybe it just needs some extra care and attention.
Whatever it is, can anyone recommend one of those intense conditioner treatments? I've heard about the ones you apply and then leave in for hours, or even a heat one?? Alternatively, would using something like vinegar when I wash it be any use? I know lots of you guys like to use homemade products!
ALso, any idea why it's mainly the ends and the fringe/bangs as you call them, that get dry? Had the same issue last time I grew it. Is it just because these are on the extremes, so get less of the head's natural oils? Or that they blow around more in the wind and lose moisture this way?
Cheers
Do you have curly hair? It could be as simple as that the natural lubricant for your hair isn't traveling to the ends of your hair, as it is harder for the oil to travel down curly hair rather than straight.
Sorry I don't know of any deep conditioners myself, I'm an water wash only kind of guy. But I'm sure one of the gentlemen(or ladies) here can give you a recommendation.
It's very thick and wavy, so yes this is probably why. I do find that if I've been "playing" with my hair after a while it becomes a lot softer, as my hands have distributed the oils.
Hey Jude
I'm pretty sure that the dry ends are caused by the straightening. Even though using flat irons once or twice a week is not that often, it can still cause some damage and dry ends. I can say that because I used to straighten my hair everyday for a few months, but luckily I stopped and now i've been "flat-iron free" for about 6 months. Oh, and I also never blow dry, or even towel dry my hair.
Anyway I don't know anything about "intense" conditioners, or deep conditioners and stuff like that. All I can suggest is to cut down straightening for a while, or if you can stop doing it completely. If you have curly hair definately condition it often, even everyday if you can. Buying really expensive condtioner doesn't really mean that you'll get the best results. I found out that there are cheap ones that are quite good.
Also, again if you have curly hair, don't shampoo it that often. Once or twice a week is OK.
You can also try oiling. I've heard that jojoba oil is great, but i've only tried olive oil and i'm quite pleased with the results.
Anyway, how long is your hair ?
Luben
Thanks for the advice. I know straightening damages hair but I had exactly the same issues when I grew it a few years ago, so I know that isn't what's causing it.
I've been growing for a year now so it's about 6 inches I would guess. Using coconut oil mainly but I'm going to invest in some jojoba oil soon and maybe rotate them, see which is better. I also might try using olive oil before washing, seeing as a lot of people have recommended that.
Good Question...
Obviously there are many commercial products available, but for it is hard to beat plain old olive oil. My hair is thing and tends towards frizziness. shampoo, tend work in a small amount of olive oil.....leave it in as long as possible either while you shave, etc....or longer if you are doing chores around the house......rinse it out completely (I rinse with a cheap conditioner). Also a very small amount of Jojoba Oil just on the ends will help.
Thanks for the question..

Sit in the sun
Day 2
Mix 3 gobs of Honey
Half a Cup of white vinager
Half cup of cold water
Half a cup of milk
Pour this over your head like a rince. Then shampoo only your roots.
I got this recipe from Alanis Morrissette when I was in Ottawa.
Isn't THAT ironic - sorry - couldn't resist :-D

Hehehehe...Glad you said that.
It works though, and if it's good enough for her, than It's gotta be ok for me.
Sounds like a nice cake recipe! Do you know her personally!
Of course if it was Jennifer Patterson from the two fat ladies it would have anchovies in it!
And she never washed her hands........
LOL
Nah. I dont know her personaly. She is a Canadian and she was at the Juno Awards. I am a graphic designer by trade, and so I was with na photographer for Canadian Living Mag. I was on loactation on contract. We met her and for the photos, the photographer actually had to use a "Dulling spray" to take some of the shine out of her hair so the lighting would not be so harsh.
So I just asked her what she did. She gave me her secret.
hi jude,
sunny weather & straightening with heat can definitely contribute to dry hair. do you use a heat protectant when you straighten your hair? chi silk infusion or redken smooth down heat glide are good ones.
you gotten some great recipes for homemade conditioners. here are some products as well. a few of my fav deep conditioners are:
aubrey organics (ao) rosa mosqueta, ao honey suckle rose, ao (gpb)
glycogen protein balancing,
also, the ends are the oldest part of your hair & therefore need protection from damage from heat or the environment -- sun/wind/air. you could try using heat less often (once a month), no-pooing (conditioner only washes), oiling your ends (jojoba, olive, coconut oil, or shea butter) & protective styles (pony's, braids, buns)
