Hi Hairy People,
I recently had to spend a lot of time at SF General (nothing major, and I'm fine now; so, on with the main topic of HAIR - lol).... And much to my amazement and surprise, I saw lots of guys with ponytail, --- and I do mean, "LOTS!!!!!" It didn't matter whether the guy was a patient or a hospital staff member, the parade of ponytails walking by was so profuse that it actually started to get BORING to look at them (I mean, like, couldn't they have at least attempted a braid or bun or something DIFFERENT? - lol)....
Seriously, though, I found this sign a very encouraging one. It wasn't all that long ago that all I saw walking by me in SF was shaved heads everywhere, --- not that this still sin't a popular style around here; just that it isn't quite as prevalent as a few years ago.... THANK GOODNESS!!
Just thought I'd share this tidbit of "news" from the Left Coast...
Happy growing, everyone!
- Ken in San Francisco
Hi Ken, hope you're well, I have had to spend a fair amount of time in hospital with my wife and I too have noticed lots of doctors and med staff with ponytails. Also my dentist has long hair and wears it in a ponytail. Good times :-))
~ Dave
Hi Dave,
So glad to hear that San Francisco isn't the only place in the world with a lot of ponytail sightings... YIPEE, it looks like an international hairy take-over!!
Take care, Dave, --- and I hope you & your wife stay well!
- Ken
Thanks Ken, and by the way, FANTASTIC update you posted the other day, sorry I missed it, my life has been manic of late.
cheers Dave
Wow Ken! Did something major just happen and we didn't notice?
You saw so many ponytails that you actually got bored with looking at them? That has to be the coolest thing I've read here in a long time. I mean, I know it would take a lot of ponytails for that to happen. Cool.
I think this rise in numbers of longhairs is going to continue to increase. Maybe that's why the hair haters are becoming more bold and popping off their foolishness in public more often. (Mike's post "sometimes you gotta love society")
If hospital staff are starting to wear their hair long then it's certainly a step in the right direction for us. How many "professionals" secretly want to grow their hair out?
Happy growing,
Paul
Yes, isn't that amazing how STUPID some people can act in public?!! I mean, that woman that spoke to Mike in that way only made herself look like a total idiot!!!!
LOL, my guess is that a LOT of them (I aught to know, since I used to be one of 'em myself)!!
You, too!!
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken
I worked in the hospital at UCSF for 15 years, mostly with long hair. Nobody ever said a word about it except for nurses offering to french braid it for me.
Interesting that you mention UCSF on Parnasus. I used to assist Marge Gabbert, the Ballroom dance teacher that taught in the Mulberry Student Union's gym room there, during the early - mid '90s. She still teaches dance classes there, I believe; but, I got lazy and stopped assisting her (lol)!!
Small world, eh?
Take Care,
Ken
Hope is well with you Ken and congratulations on the 9 year mark! Looking excellent as always!
My wife had her appendex removed last year and I noticed a few longhairs members of the staff. Not many, but enough to signal that long hair is back and ain't nobody going to stop it!
Bruce
Many thanks for the kind words, Bruce!
Glad to know your wife's appendix was safely removed, as my dad apparently almost lost his life when he was younger and had his removed as well (many moons ago.... LOL). It ultimately doesn't matter to me to see longhairs in great numbers, as long as there are always at least a FEW of us around to encourage the rest who want to do the same. Seeing just one other longhair we can relate to sometimes is all it takes to give us fellow male humans the needed courage to become who we really want to be, rather than stay part of the shorn sheep (lol)!!
Take care, --- and hope that you & your wife stay well & happy!

I've seen the ocassional longhair, in a hospital setting, but not a parade like you did. Years ago, in a hospital in Hagerstown, a lab tech that came to do blood draws, was a gorgeous young man with golden blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail. I recently had a surgical procedure in Gettysburg (for which I am ever so slowly recovering from, surgeon says 3 months is average, it's only 1 month post-op), and the male nurse in charge of the surgical team was a curly red-headed young man with shoulder-length hair. He came into pre-op to introduce himself, holding two surgical caps in his hands, one he handed to me while explaining things and asking if I had questions, the other was for him. He wheeled me into OR, helped position me, and wheeled me out to post-op and checked vitals before sending me back to the short procedure waiting unit.
Glad to hear that you're in the recovery stage now that your operation is complete, as well as it's encouraging to hear about the longhairs that were part of the hospital staff which took such good care of you, --- two thumbs up, I'd say!!
Thanks for your reply, Carol!
Take Care,

Hi Ken,
It is always a pleasure to see you posting. I notice the same as you while talking my walks to the nearby mall. There are both ponytail sightings (and some of those are long ones, waist length at times) as well as guys wearing it down. My hair is tailed while golfing, and loose otherwise. It is good to know that long hair is alive and well, here in Halifax!
Take care,
David
Hi David,
Sounds like Halifax has a similar longhair-friendly climate to San Francisco (rarely gets very hot, in other words). In May of '05 I visited the UK, spending 3 days up in Scotland seeing a longtime friend of mine who had moved there from CA. While visiting Edinburg, I noticed the same thing: lots & lots of longhairs!! A few guys had mid-back or even waist-length ponytails; but, most of what I saw was around shoulder-length and loose, blowing all over the place in the wild Scottish wind!
Take care, David, --- and hope you are keeping yourself well & happy!

Hi Ken,
That's very refreshing to hear about that uptick of longhair sightings:)For you to get bored must have meant better than 50% of the hospital staff/patients were longhairs. Its cool being the minority in that sense but sometimes you just like to see more of us!YEA!Hopefully the trend is staring to change for the better as far as I'm concerned.Anyway I'm glad you being there wasn't for something serious. Thanks for giving us that update my friend:)Oh yes,I'll have to drop you a line soon too.Cheers
Mark
Hi Mark,
Yes, it is indeed always great to see more and more of us longhairs than it is to look around and wonder if we are becoming a "dieing breed" (LOL).... There were times during the '90s when I was beginning to wonder if it wasn't a matter of the latter condition!
I hope your mom is doing well out on the West Coast w/ your brother nearby, and that things in general are going great for you!!
Long Lox 4 ever,
Ken
Hi, Ken,
I am glad you are fine now and that it was nothing major. Your post reminded me of a local commercial for a hospital (Baptist in Columbus, Miss.). The doctor doing most of the talking has curly hair down to his collar, and the guy next to him (also on the staff) has long hair in a bun. Maybe he could give pointers to the staff at SF General [grin]. Nevertheless, it's a good sign that long hair is more accepted when small-city hospitals in Mississippi use longhairs in advertisements.
Tracy
Hi Tracy,
Yes, most definitely that is a good sign when you start seeing more longhairs in advertisements, --- whether in a small city or a large one!! Thanks so much for your reply... And keep on being a shining light of longhairedness in Mississippi!
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken in San Francisco
