I am curious, not for just here, but for the hole world, if there are more people with long hair that are not Metalheads, or into Fantasy and other such things, then there is that are?
allso, i am new hear, Seventeen year old metalhead, goal= as long as i can, for head and beard, i am curently trying to grow my moustache out, so i can curl it like Hook.
You'll find a lot of metalheads here, --- although, unfortunately, I'm not one of 'em...
And I'd say that you're off to a GREAT start!!! Keep it growin', --- and WELCOME to the board!!
- Ken in San Francisco
Yep, I definitely am. Here I am a month ago in Stockholm (my hair's noticeably longer since then).
Hi,
I'm from Germany, 20 year old Metalhead with near hip-length hair.
Hi, I'm a die-hard vinyl collecting, tape trading, patch wearing Metal Head from Minnesota, USA.
Hi Hegg,
Hope all is well with you mate.
I could not agree with you more and I don't tend to do much of the patch collecting these days. Great to see an updated picture and you hair has certainly got alot longer and looks in great condition.
Cheers,
John.B
Hey, John.
Things are well, as I'm anticipating one of the biggest concerts in one week for me. I hope you're doing great as well, John!
I'm glad for that, it's good some people recognize true spirit of Metal support and passion. Thanks! I hadn't washed my hair for a week + in that picture so it doesn't look as it normally does.
Cheers, John.
Hegg
you look really great here!
Which concert is it?
do you know of anything about a festival in the moutains?I heard about it on a website but wasn't sure when it was exactly.
Do you like viking metal at all?
Thanks!
It's the US tour of Finnish Black/Death Metal legends Archgoat.
Yes, are you speaking about Gathering of Shadows Fest in Colorado? If so, that already took place but it's annual however it's invite only, but quite easy to get invited.
Some, though I will say it's not my specialty.
Yeah that's what it was! It sounds really neat,I wish I didn't live so far from there,I live in the midwest*blah* the only Festivals we have here are milwaukee metalfest, central illinois metalfest, and pagan fest(which i missed last year) The reason why I asked about viking metal is it's pretty various, like bands like Taake, thyrfing, and so on.
I do like the lighter stuff like folk metal to be honest,I used to be strictly black metal a few years ago..I listen to it but I'm really picky about it,I really am in love with this band VinterLand right now.
Ah, okay. Yeah, I would love to attend it as well, I live near you, so I understand it's hard to travel across the country. Taake is actually one of my favorite Norwegian bands. I have the first chapter of albums from that band, some really impressive stuff, some of Norway's finest. Ohh, Vinterland from Sweden? I've heard their first full length (their only album, I think?) and it's really enjoyable material.
That's cool you live near me,I live on the border of IL/WI and I never have really met anyone else into metal.I was basically the only metalhead in highschool(counting the male population too) where do you meet some of your friends?I know it's random but I was curious if there were any friendly people left in the midwest:)
I live on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, so I live close, not extremely close, but pretty close. I understand, because I'm the only Metalhead in my school and city (it seems :P). I met my best friend, who is a metalhead like me, online about 3 years ago. Now we attend shows together and hangout on a regular basis. He's my only metalhead friend though, that lives in the same area anyway. I meet other like minded people at shows, too, but I'm quite shy so usually I can't find myself to strike up a conversation with somebody. I think there's a shortage of friendly people in the Midwest, sadly, but there's a few ;)
You are so lucky! I would give anything to have a friend like that! My boyfriend tolerates my music it seems,he's more into the lighter stuff like sabbath, guns n roses and such,he likes a few of the bands i do but he isn't a full blown metal head,Well who knows you could come to a show near me and we could hang out, don't you have a girlfriend?I could be wrong lol.btw everytime i talk to people at shows they ignore me,not sure why:(
Ha, I believe I am lucky, too. Ohh, I see he's more of a Classic type of listener. Yeah, that would be awesome, I would like that, definitely! I don't have a girlfriend, however I am close to a girl but she's not living near me so it can't work too well at the moment. Awh, well, people probably don't try to be mean by ignoring you, maybe they're shy around girls? :p
If you ever want to talk you can message me on YAHOO at
a_Thousandswordss
I'm usually on.
You are a really nice guy:)
Ooops I meant A_Thousandswords
LOL sorry:)
Okay, I'll keep in contact through e-mail, thanks :) You're really nice, too :)
Yes I've made no issue that I do like metal music have liked it for one or two years! As some people know I've been to quite a few of European festivals and in he last couple of years met up with Kevin.c at Wacken (poor line-up this year).
Cheers,
John.B
Just one or 2 years?? Ahemmmm... Add a zero next to the two, and then we're talking more like it!
John, why the heck don't you brag a bit about your fine photography you do at Metal concerts? That's my favorite part of seeing Metal heads, --- the amazing pics of longhaired head-banging!!!
- Ken
Hi Ken,
Well your probably right about that and I've enjoyed rock to heavy metal to death metal for more years that an I can remember and as you know I've never made any bones about that.
As for the metal photography I've never been one to brag and there are plenty of other people out there and to be honest taking poor pictures. It's a great art form and I've had a camera since I was a kid and always taken pictures of live people etc. I know I have a good eye for capturing people and bands etc it's fun to do and I think the passion would die I have to make money from it.
Thanks for the kind words.
Cheers,
John.B
Up until the recent past, "longhair music" meant classical music. In earlier times many intellectuals, artists, and musicians were associated with long hair. There were some shifts beginning in the late-60s with the hippie movement. Anytime before the later parts of the 20th century, when you said "longhair music", you meant classical.
I'm a classical music person (all periods 15th century onward) with folk of various types thrown in - no heavy metal. So I'm a real "longhair" - at least the way the term was used until fairly recently.
Most women I know, who prefer long hair for themselves, and on men; are either artistic types, or voraceous romance novel readers. I hate romance novels, but I have a variance of art skills and interests. Most classic paintings feature long hair, on both sexes. I also have Aspergers Syndrome, a form of high-functioning Autism (as do quite a few MLHH members), and the Autistic population in general, and Aspies in particular, tend to prefer long hair. A USENET board I post on, once quizzed members about hair length, the majority of posters, both male and female, had hair shoulder-length or longer. Long hair seems to be the norm in Autist culture, partly due to the fact that many Auties have an adversion to scissors and clippers.
While the MLHH board has a number of members involved in metal and fantasy, there are classical music enthusiasts and other various interests as well. If you search the archives, this question of metal music has been raised before, as well as those involved in fantasy such as LARP & SCA.
Welcome to the board, hey great picture too
I am into fantasy and sf books and movies and tv, and rock music (mostly of the 80s stadium rock variety and 90s grunge era music). I am not overly familiar with most recent metal music but have promised myself to give it a try sometime.
I do think long hair goes with a love of music of whatever form though, I enjoy celtic music and renaissance era dance music, which is kind of the rock music of its time. I also love movie soundtracks too, listening to music from the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy as I write :)
So score on for the fantasy type stuff but not yet one for metal!
Me and my cousin just came back from Rockstar Mayhem 2009 it was amazing! oh yeah I love fantasy stuff as well. Im mainly a fan of folk/viking and some black metal=a lot of fantasy elements throughout!
Here a pic of us watching Slayer and Killswitch Engage!
(My absolute favs were Behemoth and Killswitch!)
Hmmmmmm,what do you all think????LOL
Hey Mark, that is a perfect shot...wow!!!
Hope to talk to you soon buddy,
Max
Ah,a Mozart fan, I see ;)
That makes a great publicity shot, and when you go out to California, you can be the next big thing!
I seriously love that shot!
Take care bro LOL
ROCK ON MAN! Just picked up my first Bass at almost 40 yrs old!

I listen to metal, but haven't been a good "metalhead" lately. I haven't been to a concert in five years. :(
The city I moved to banned all good music jigs from coming in (it's ALL country now...) and I really haven't had an opportunity to travel to anything. I am especially upset that I missed Amon Amarth, Mastodon, and Slayer coming through the Northwest last November.
I'm a metalhead too, the crowds at concerts inspired me to pursue my dream of having longhair.
Great post Draziw.
I do love metal but I wouldn't call myself a Metal Head. I also like Alternative, Hard Rock, Classic Rock and at least a few songs from any genre that you can name.
I like Fantasy as well, and yes, role playing games. I even created my own when my buds got bored with D&D. I state with pride mine was far more bloody and graphic. Nothing beats rolling the dice to see just how far your foe's head roles when you chop it off. Hehehe.
But neither of these things is the basis for growing my hair. I wanted longhair since I was about five or so. I simply hated haircuts and soon realized there was no real reason to get one. Fortunately for me, it was the 70's.
I believe any reason is a good reason to grow your hair.
Paul
Fellow headbanger here! I'm just growing my hair out for the look. -Mike-
22 year old metalhead here from Maryland. I like all the subgenres of metal, but my favorite is epic heavy metal like Manilla Road, Doomsword, Ironsword, and Battleroar.
Welcome Draziw! I'm a 25-year old metalhead from NJ. Been into metal since I was 8 or 9. Mainly into black metal and power metal (epic/symphonic is the best!), coincidentally I have the same Blind guardian poster hanging up, awesome taste man. Your hair looks great too.
-Phil
I love metal, but im more of a complete Rock'N'Roll junkie. I like everything from KISS (my favorite band) to the Grateful Dead to Pantera.
I've been raised on long hair and rock and roll, every one of my dads friends was in bands in highschool, and ive been around them all my life.
I went to 2 KISS concerts when i was 5 and 6.
I used to live in Millersville, MD and wish i was still down there for the better music scene.
As soon as i can Im getting the hell out of hagerstown and moving back to Baltimore to get into the metal scene down there instead of the ocasional metal show and driving his corvette when i go down to my uncles.
Good question, but it's one I can't answer. I associate closely with some metalheads (at least as closely as I can when they're hundreds of miles away), but I don't really consider myself a metalhead. (For "metalheads" in the previous sentence, you can also substitute "Goths".) I do love my Tolkien, though. :-)

Well I can't quote specific numbers but it was my observation at the Wacken Metal Festival that we were slightly outnumbered by shorthairs. The first day when we were all arriving and meeting up with people in the beer garden I would say longhairs were in the majority. However as the bulk of the people got there we were say 45% of all there. I didn't dwell on this but sort of casually noticed more and more shorthairs and lots of shaved heads.. I have a few videos of the crowd at one of the past festivals we attended if you want to look and see what you think.
These are crowd shots of people milling about sitting around etc.
That's Type O playing in the background.
That sucks. Why would you bring short hair to a metal show, you can't headbang right...
...it just looks like your having a seisure
ROFL
Good one and your right.
Oh yes I remember it well.
Cheers,
John.B
Do you think it's the more mainstream route that Wacken is going that is bringing more of the short hairs? I remember when I went in 2007, it seemed that most of the crowd were long hairs.
That may be. I seem to remember in 2005 and 06 when the crowds were smaller shorthairs were fairly few. In 07 and 08 the capacity went up to 70,000 plus so your probably right.
I'm not going this year, like John said the line up is not so great and in my opinion not worth the money. I would really like to go to Metalcamp sometime.
Kevin

The guy that walks by left to right at the 10 second mark has fantastic hair, just superb. Waist length and honey blond. Many others have really long hair too. Overall, that is the most longhairs I have ever seen gathered in one place. Great video, Kevin.
Scott
Count me in. XP I listen mostly to metal, rock, hard rock,Punk,Pop Punk but i'm also open to other genres such as Swing,Reggae,Pop,Rap,R&B,Ska...
I don't like to consider myself a Metalhead...i like Rocker more. :D
