I hadn't trimmed since last August when I had 3 inches cut. Last summer was horrible for my hair as I experienced the worst shed of my life. So far this summer has been better (though still a higher shed rate than during the other seasons) but I felt the need for a bit of a freshening of the ends. (sorry John.B) LOL!
I put it into a segmented ponytail before the trim:
My fiancee then cut off about 3/4 of an inch, perhaps a bit more on one side. That was a couple of weeks ago. This is how it currently looks:
The lighter, redder photos are due to a different camera angle and its differing lighting effect.
I miss that length some but I'm ready to go at least a year now without trims which will take me through my honeymoon next year. I know my hair isn't lengthening as quickly as when it was shorter but I'm pretty confident I'll make slow but steady progress towards waist length. As for very long range plans, I have been thinking still about terminal length partly to satisfy my curiosity.
Hi Jason,
The hair looks amazing and I'll forgive you for the "trim" pun...lol! I would be great to see you reach that waist length goal and as we know we just have to be patient.
Do send my best to Amanda.
Cheers,
John.B
Hi John,
Thanks for being understanding and forgiving about my trim! :D
Yeah, I'm just trying to forget about my length for a while and hopefully waist-length will surprise me.
Amanda and I send you our best as well.
Really nice hair you got there!
Looks good even after the trim. Congrats!
-Andrea
Hi Andrea,
Thanks a lot!
Your hair is very pretty and the length is what I am striving for. I have been growing mine for about 4 years now. I was having the barber trim the ends every 6 weeks but it was taking forever so I haven't trimed it for about a year now and finally I'm seing some results.
Wow,your hair is amazing too! Looks really healthy, straight, long and I personally love the color. Keep it up!
Thank you!
Trims can definitely hinder one's progress. I wouldn't recommend them more than once per year. Your hair looks fantastic! I love its color.
!
Hi Jason,
Great pics as always, and I have to admit, the trim is hardly noticeable especially if you hadn't told us.I like the colouring of your hair with the different lighting in the ladder shots.Thankfully your fiancee was careful with your hair and didn't do a wholesale cut.Anyway your hair is making progress and waist length should be very doable for you my friend:)Cheers
Mark
Hey Mark,
Thanks for the kind words. There are very few people I would trust with scissors around my hair but my fiancee knows how important it is to me. As it was she cut a little more than I wanted her too but I didn't make a big deal out of it. Hopefully waistlength won't be too far away.
Take care my friend,
Jason
Looking great Jason!
Protecting your hair from wear and tear as much as possible will surely aid in reaching your maximum length.
I keep mine in a segmented ponytail during the day and when I sleep.
- Oren
Thanks Oren!
I wear mine in a braid 95% of the time when I go out. It's the braid tassle itself that I know I need to be more careful with. I find it wants to get caught between my back and the back of my chair at work. I need to avoid friction like this if I'm going to achieve super lengths.
Hi Jason - I have the same problem with the tassle, too.
That's where most breakage and wear occurs.

GREAT update pics, Jason, --- and also helpful to read the comments you've shared here... your mane ALWAYS looks extremely well cared-for and in *wonderful* shape!!!
If it wasn't for me constantly chasing after the split ends on my own by using the "Search & Destroy" method of cutting off the individual offenders, I'd probably be doing the same thing you just did of annually cutting off an inch or so. Your fiancee did a very professional-looking job of trimming, --- even better than most "professionals" seem to know how to do!
In any case, no worries about how long it takes to get to terminal length. With hair-farming, time is on our side re. that issue (LOL)!!
Take Care,
Ken
Hey Ken,
Thank you!
Thanks for reminding me about S & D. I really need to give it more of a try. It certainly has worked wonderfully for you!
Going for terminal definitely takes patience but fortunately the journey is just as funning as the destination!

Hi Jason,
Thank you for sharing your inspirational update with us, and your tim went very well indeed, and your ends are definitely thicker. Your hair is slowing more waves in your latest photos as well. I am sure that you will have no difficulty in achieving your goals.
I know that you are aware of Tammy's recent trim, and she is definitely happy with the results. I might have her do a small trim on my ends next time I go to see her in the fall.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
Thanks for your kind comments.
Tammy's trim did turn out very well and I'm glad that she's happy with it.
There is something very nice about the feeling of the ends of freshly trimmed hair. I like how my brush and fingers glide through the ends more easily now. The trick is to trim as little as possible to achieve this. I think if you allow Tammy to do a small trim that it wouldn't hurt your long-range goals at all.
Best,
Jason
Nice neat look, Jason
Nice green background !!
Thanks for Sharing
Walter
Hey Walter,
Thanks for the support!

Jason
Hey Jason !
Your method is what I would use if I wanted to trim my hair (maybe soon ? The ends begins to snag easily...) Except that I don't have a fiancee ! :D
Seems to be very green on your backgroud :)
Take care,
Vivien
Hey Vivien,
The method of putting one's hair in a ponytail before trimming works quite well. My fiancee actually has to do a bit of adjusting with it loose too but the main cut was done with my hair banded.
Perhaps a small trim would help with your snags. Just a small one though! :)
Thanks for your comment,
Jason
Very, very nice. And to think that you started your journey from a shaved head. This is really amazing, and a wonderful inspiration for all wanna-be longhairs. I expecially like the segmented ponytail. I think that is a great look for anyone with long hair. Congratulations and best wishes for your continued growing experience.
Hi Marco,
Thank you very much! If I can serve as any type of inspiration for other guys to grow their hair long, then that's a really cool thing!
Jason
Nice update Jason, The hair looks good.
Are we counting down the days until the wedding?
Kevin
Thanks Kevin.
The countdown has begun. We're under a year now - 352 days according to my calculation.
Your hair looks great as always. I agree with you and think that a trim here and there can make the ends look much nicer.
Thanks Garth. I think trims once in a great while are a good thing.
What a marvelous update Jason! Your hair is perfection!
Bruce
Thanks so much Bruce!
looks great Jason! what kickass locks you have there sir :)
Your a big inspiration for me and I def want mine to look like yours at that length. Hope all is well take care bro :)
Hey Mark,
Thanks dude! I'm glad I can serve as some inspiration for you. Your waves are already looking fantastic and they're only going to look better as your hair gets longer. I'm looking forward to your next update.
Best,
Jason

the only way to remedy this. Your hair grows faster and/or sheds less on the left side. For me (in 2004) it was growing faster and/or shedding less on the right. I am reasonably sure mine has evened up on its own.
Your hair looks great and it will take time to recover from the severe 2008 shed as will mine. MSM and biotin may help to restore hair density. May it grow to your waist and beyond.
Scott
It's interesting that you noticed that about the left side of my hair. It's definitely true. I have this patch of very thick hair in back of my left ear that I think contributes to this. I have noticed for many years how very thick it is there and it translates into the thickness all the way down to the ends.
I had Amanda concentrate on trying to even it but I think it's still a bit longer on that side. I'm actually thankful for that bonus spot of extra thickness even if it does mean my ends will look uneven at times.
My hair has thickened some but it still has a ways to go to make up for last year. Let's hope we never have terrible sheds like that again. It's still very puzzling why many of us had such a bad summer last year. Like I mentioned in my original post, I have noticed some increase this summer but nowhere near as bad. I hope that yours doesn't increase again.
I do take MSM periodically and should probably add biotin. Thanks for your post, Scott. You're a huge inspiration to me.
