Hi everyone,
Just a quick question about parts. For the past few months I have mostly parted my hair in the middle (top of head), and it falls that way evenly, but I have begun to wonder if that just makes it go flat and is bad to have in the same place every day.
Today, I went back to my old part, from when I was a kid, on the left side top. It looks ok, but I am not sure if I will keep it or keep changing it. (my hair is like 2 years along)
I was wondering if everyone keeps the same part, parts in the middle, or varies it, or has no part because you have so much hair, there is no way to divide it?
Thanks for all your great posts over the last few months.

I comb mine straight back and let it do what it wants. It always parts about 3/4 inch to the left.
Thanks Antinous,
Great piece of advice. I tried that this morning, after shampooing and shower, and presto, dried perfectly, finding it's own more natural part, and looks great all day. Thanks for a great bit of advice.

Hi Daniel,
I change my parting every few weeks so that the hairs on the parting fringes don't become too weathered.
Here's a little quote from an alternative hippy hair care book I have in my possession talking about this.
"There are also those who use combs in place of brushes. Most combs are made inexpensively of plastic which needless to say, does not do wonders for your hair. You shouldn't part your hair with one. In fact, if you are averse to letting your hair fall the way it wishes, use fingers and a brush to part it. First of all by parting with a comb, the natural spring of the hair on the crown is destroyed. Secondly, because the same hair is repeatedly exposed from the roots to weathering, pollution, combing and so on, consistently parting your hair in the same place leads to breakage near the scalp"
Quoted from NATURAL HAir CARE COMIX & STORIES by Mary Lee & Suzanne Perelman. (Straight Arrow Books 1973)
Hope this helps,
Duncan
Hi Duncan,
Thanks for that. I was wondering about that too, as this being our summer season, and getting a fair amount of sun on the "part" area, could cause some damage to the scalp, tanning etc., so that is part of what made me think twice about it.
Thanks for the hippie book quote on it, too.

I've always generally allowed mine to do what it wanted - and it tends to part quite naturally in the middle. One of my male friends is exactly the same - only his is determined to stay like that and there is no way to influence his hair lol!
Hi Daniel,
I really do not see any harm in keeping your existing part.
I've noticed that when you keep your hair a certain way, after a while, the hair follicles tend to align with that direction.
Over the years, I've "trained" my mustache to stay (mostly) out of my mouth by parting it in the middle, and brushing it to the sides.

Good question Daniel.Well speaking for myself I have always center parted my hair for as long as I can remember and yes, as it gets oilier it does start looking kind of flat.Guess that's the nature of having totally straight hair down to your waist. Not sure if this helps you but at least it hasn't hurt my hair in my view keeping it parted the same way.Cheers

Eh, it's not really bad for your hair to have the part located in the same place on a day to day basis. Changing the part is easy enough if you're willing to use a styling aid, be it a styling iron, gel, wax, etc. A part that you've had for a while will be stubborn and difficult to change on its own.
