This morning I attended a charity breakfast held in our local Senior Center. The woman at the door made me prove that I was indeed a senior !! More proof that long hair on we older guys takes a few years off our appearance.
I took this photo when I returned home to document the historic event ! HA! My hair is really dry and frizzy (washed it this morning, then drove with the windows down....) still growing,
but very, very slow...noticeable MPB is neatly tucked under the hat ! HA!
There is a program like that here, and just the other day we were talking about whether we should go, since we are both now old enough. We really aren't seeking charity because others need it more, but the social contacts with others in the neighborhood who are retired would be nice. The group that provides the food also feeds the poor and disabled, so if your area has the same setup, it must be common.
As for getting carded, Larry decided to do a survey on what percent of the time he'd get carded for paying the senior fare on the bus, for the first few months he was eligible. Much to his dismay, he abandoned the survey because he never got carded once! I have yet to be asked to prove my age when getting senior discounts, but I get carded sometimes going into bars, which is the ultimate in silliness. Usually the idiot wanting to see proof of my age was not even born yet the day I took my first legal drink.
No MPB yet here, and my hair is thick enough up there still that I don't get sunburn on my scalp, so my usual bandanna tack works to keep my hair in place. All I need from a hat is its brim, and a bandanna lies in the same place. I used to wear a hat with a chin strap if out all day for sun protection, the strap to keep the hat from blowing off, but when I grew the beard long, that ceased to work. Beard hair when pushed up by a chin strap provides no friction, and any hats I try to wear soon just blow away, usually in a place like by a cliff on on a bridge, where the hat cannot be retrieved.
Bill
What a great photo of you, Bill !!
The benefit we had this morning was to raise money and household items for a local family that lost everything in a fire.
Hah,nice pic you posted too, Bill! That beard is amazing...say, ever thought about braiding it? I'd love to see that.
-Andrea
I did once, when in a goofy mood in the chat room, as a joke. What surprised me was that the hair strands are so coarse in it that the braid stayed in place without a tie at the bottom! It was almost like braiding straw.
As with my mane, I like for my beard to blow freely in the breeze, so I don't braid or tie it.
Tying or braiding a long beard looks less dressy than letting it just hang free, so there is no need to tie or braid it on such occasions. And once your beard is "down", you might as well leave your hair down, too, since the whole mass will stay neater if it all hangs together, and no matter what you do, you are going to look hairy as hell anyway.
So there's never any reason I'd be braiding my beard. The answer to, "What should someone like me do for a job interview?" is, "Nothing!"
Bill
Looks cool
It looks really nice, Bill!
I like the look of braided beards.
-Andrea
Wow, it's great to see you posting again Bill and showing off your beautiful locks. Marvelous!
Bruce
Thanks! Yeah, I needed an "attitude adjustment" - one from being involved in management to one of being a user, and the only way to get that was to vanish for awhile. Now as a user my posting can run as hot and cold as I want, and if other cool stuff is happening, I may be gone for months! But hey, I DO like the crowd here.
Bill
What a wonderful photo Bill. Just superb! Would make for an extra special painting that I dare say even Monet himself may have taken on.
All the best-
Justin~
Bill,
You are looking wonderful!
Seeing the nice full plate you have before you, others have "L'eggo'd your Eggos" at the toaster without any question.
- Oren
Maybe it's just me, but in this pic I'm noticing a resemblance to a very fuzzy Donald Sutherland
If Peter Jackson needs another Gandalf and Ian McKellan is not available, you would be the best choice.
Cool pic! Looks nice. :) Nice hair too no matter the frizzyness.

Thanks for the compliment !
Walter
Thats an excellent picture of you Walter, no wonder they questioned your age, I agree long hair does make one look younger.
Thanks for your reply to my update below, much appreciated words. Thanks Walter!!

Your kind words make this old cat purr....
Thanks !!
Walter
Hi Walter,
What a pleasant surprise to see an update from you, and yes, it is still growing!
How cool it is to be thought younger than one's age, and I agree that long hair does make one look younger. I celebrated my birthday on Thursday, and most folks think I look younger than my 56 years.
Keep it growing, and stay eternally young!
David
David
Belated well wishes on your birthday (youngster !!)
And many thanks for the kind words to the oldster..Ha!
Walter
David, Happy Birthday and welcome to that
which rolls beyond the double nickles!
peace, jonalbear
looks great Walter! the long hair and hat look awesome together! I agree senior age with long hair can make one seem younger which is great too lol Ill be the same way as well :)
Thanks for the kind words for myself and the hat. That hat is older than many of our members ! Ha!
Walter
Of course they carded you! They can't have some teenager crashing their pancake breakfast and harassing the old folks!
Well I exaggerate some but you don't look a day over 35.
Congrats on being carded!
Bruce
Bruce
35 !! gasp !...but I'll take it Ha!
Thanks for the kind words...
Walter
Hey Walter
Great photo and you don't even look old enough to be carded yet. Maybe about 10 years from now. Me carded? Impossible! Afterall, everybody knows that I am not playing with a full deck! Remember, you even met me once. LOL :-)
Justin~
Justin~
Yup...we have met and you are one of the few to have seen the white, gray, blotches and wrinkles up close and personal.
Thanks for the compliments (lies?? Ha!)
Walter
Hey Walter, you look as fantastic as ever and I can see why you would be questioned passing yourself off as a senior!LOL.Certainly you don't look it.I do agree that longhair does take years off of ones appearance as you obviously demonstrate.Hope you are having a great weekend otherwise.Opal and I send our best wishes out your way my friend:)Cheers
Mark
Mark and Opal
The attached photo is a shot of "Ming Chu" and five of her six kttens.....the "Calico Herd" now stands at 19...it is cat heaven here !
Thank You both for the kinds words....purrr
Walter (and the gang)
Hi Walter,
That's quite an army/herd you've got going there my friend!I don't know how you are able to manage them all but I guess it takes practice.Opal couldn't resist hamming it up herself:)Cheers
Mark
Well hasn't Opal turned into a beautiful cat !!?
I call my place "The Lighthouse Ranch", and the herd, "The Ladies of the Lighthouse Ranch" (sounds sort of like a Nevada Brothel, huh!?) They are all outdoor cats...
Haha, your story is quite funny ! And this is a great photo !
Vivien
Vivien;
Glad you got a giggle out of that....thanks for the compliment !
Walter
Walter, Great photo of you. Reminds me of the old Jonathan Edwards album(cover) "Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy" if you are familiar with it.------ I rarely get carded but at almost 57 yrs old I qualify differently at different places. At a certain motel in Marquette MI I've qualified for the last 9 yrs. Their idea of being a senior starts at 48 yrs old for some reason,
peace, jonalbear
Jonalbear
Right you are....of course it is an "old" album cover ! Ha!
Jonathan Edwards put out some great tunes in his day !!
Thanks
Great pic Walter and you are as young as you feel!
Only being 29 again! I still long for the day when they ask for ID, however when I come over to USA in October I bet you I will be ID'd at least once lol!
Cheers,
John.B
...depends on the time of day ! Ha!
On your visit, I will make a point of ID'ing you !
Thanks for the compliment
Walter
You got good shoulder-length hair. I could understand you were trying to hide any bald spots underneath your hat. To me, I do not want to ever, ever bald.
Matthew
Matthew;
Thanks for the compliment on my (visible) hair. And actually by the time a guy is old enough that his hair is thinning, there are enough other things going on, that it is not really a big deal...I am fortunate to continue to live a life of "high adventure" with or without thick locks and I enjoy what I have.
Walter
Walter if you ever come through the check out at my store I'll be sure to card you. I'll explain to the cashier "you see these guy's wear hats to look older so they can buy booze so we have to be careful"
As for the senior centre carding well when they stop carding me for that it's probably time to get the shovel out and start digging.
Kevin
"you see these guy's wear hats to look older so they can buy booze so we have to be careful"
The secret is out ! Ha!
Thanks for the comments !
Walter
Cool.
When I buy a drink in a bar I often ask the bartender, "what? your not going to card me?" usually gets a laugh.
Paul
Paul;
Well, it has been a long time since I've been carded for a drink, but I am getting regularly carded when asking for senior rates, discounts, etc....I really believe the long hair makes a difference. If I pull my hair back, don't wear a hat and lose the stash, I think I look much older.
Awesome update, the hair's coming along nice. I seem to remember back when you posted your avatar pic, and I think that was the last time I saw a photo of you, so a big update to me. As for getting carded. Well I would have carded you too. Senior? You certainly don't look it!
I've always found it amazing that long hair can (and facial hair on some) can change someone's apparent age so drasticly, but in a good way normally.
Thanks for the great words. I rarely post updates as my hair is growing incredible slow....I think the avatar is about 6 years old and there is not really a great difference.
We are lucky to be living in an age when we can experiment with hair length, style, facial hair and clothing to affect our appearance.
Again Thanks
Walter
Walter,
I've gotta say your "membership card" is "valid" and it is looking wonderful!
I think that woman at the Senior Center was just wanted to hold you up moment so that she can ogle over your fine locks ;-)

Thanks for the words Oren. Sometimes it has been frustrating to see young guys grow hair longer than mine in 6 months or so.....needless to say folks with beards longer than my hair drive me mad ! Ha !
Take Care my friend

Great picture, Walter. Good to see your post: like me, updates from you are far and few between.
I like the hat: again, like you, I have been lately getting into hats more for the same reasons. Ha!
Thanks for the compliment, Matt.
As my growth is so slow, I rarely post update photos and I've been wear hats for a long time....partly for appearance, but mostly for sun protection.
Thanks
Walter
I believe you, knowing where you live, Walter. In a cooler clime it might be vanity, but I imagine that without a hat you would get sunburnt on top, and that doesn't sound like any fun atall.
After looking at the picture, I would have carded you too. Great pic. Love the hat.
"...Love the hat..."
The hat is the same one as my avatar.....that is a genuine Western Rattlesnake hatband and this is the third hat he has "lived" on.
Thanks for the kind words....
Walter
Hi Walter,
Sorry so late in replying; but, regardless, you look hands-down FLAWLESS there, young man!!!! And re. MPB: who do you know that isn't somewhere near to our age that doesn't have at least SOME degree of hair loss or thinning? I have a receding hairline, for example; but hey, the fact that I still have about 90% of my hair still attached to my scalp I find amazing... and something to be grateful for (as long as I at least have 2 or 3 hairs left to grow long - LOL)!!
Very nice pic there, Walter; but, I'm still not totally convinced you're a genuine senior citizen... I'd card you, too!
Take care, --- and keep it growin' (regardless of however slowly the rate - lol)!!
- Ken
Kind, kind words Mr. Ken !! Thanks...but trust me if you saw me first thing in the morning you would not have to be convinced that I am a "genuine" senior citizen.....Yuk !
When I was young, my hair was very thick and extremely curly (which I hated and which caused me all sorts of troubles in the military as it was never "neat" Ha!) While I have MPB, I will never be "bald" as the back and sides are full and healthy.
Again, thanks for the compliments..
Walter
