Do you guys keep the sides of your hair short? Meaning just the parts near the ears to keep masculine-looking sideburns? The hair in that area for me is extremely curly and bushy... it looks terrible. Every 9 months I buzz that part to keep sideburns.
Do you guys just let it grow?
I keep my beard close cut once a week and do the side burns at the same time. They get looking pretty wild. tommie
I just forget the sideburns and grow out me a goatee
I just let it grow. It grows a little slower but I think it's worth it to deal with it for a couple months until it acts normal than deal with buzzing it forever.
Then again, I have straight hair and the side hair just naturally grows up and behind my ears, so it doesn't bother me.
I'm about 4 months into growing my hair out and thats been an issue with me for a few weeks now
In terms of facial hair, I want to remain clean cut, so when i shave i tuck as much of that hair behind my ear as possible. Then I shave the sideburn straight, at about the midpoint of my ear.
After the 2 month mark, I took a pair of scissors to that area and snipped about half an inch from the area right about my sideburns, and didnt really mess anything up. Im not sure if I'll have to do that again, but I'm thinking I will. I don't want "sideburn hair" curling into my ears and itching me.
I don't trust myself enough to do that... So I wait for quite a long time and then get someone at a salon to do it for me.
I put my glasses on and clip anything that goes past. It works for me and ends up even.

Wow that's a great idea. I think I might do that before next Tuesday (when I move for school)

That is what this forum is all about...

Simple, yet genius!
Thanks
Nah, I keep those trimmed. They are right below my ear lobe.

I have a beard, so I treat it as part of my beard and trim it to blend in.
Back when I trimmed my beard I did that. I'd trim the sideburn hair to appear to be the same length all the way up to the top of where my ears are attached, rather than to the point in the middle of my ears where the coarseness of the hair changed. Since the head hair was finer than the beard hair, this meant it had to actually be longer so that when it laid down it appeared to be the same length. Otherwise, it would appear there was a depression there at the top half of my ears.
When I quit trimming my beard (both it and my mane are now at terminal length) of course I quit trimming the sideburns, too.

When I get that part trimmed, I usually just get it cut like a normal guy's.
What's a normal guy?
I meant your typical short guy haircut. Don't get me wrong, I'm growing my hair to an atypical length (it already is), but I like to keep that part trimmed up... especially since it's curly
It's difficult to sometimes differentiate between one's head hair around the ears and the sideburn hair (AKA part of your beard hair). The easiest way I know of is to notice as Bill I think commented that head hair is thinner and softer; while beard and sideburn hair is coarser.
Here's what worked for me: think back to what you looked like before puberty (before you had any beard growth stubble). The natural hairline of most young males included a bit of "sideburn" look to it, --- and that part of the hair is easily hooked behind the ears (when long enough). About half-way down the length of the ear (in other words, half-way between the top of the ear and the ear lobe) is about the maximum distance that most males had any hair growing in that area prior to beard growth. AFTER one's beard fully grows in, it's much harder to tell where your old hairline as a boy used to end, and the new beard hair now begins. But, again, beard hair is usually much coarser and thicker than head hair; so, use those concepts as your guide!
I hope that info helped at least a little bit!

Well, my before-beard boy hair gets very curly and stupid-looking in that area. I have no choice but to keep it short. It looks CRAZY and definitely doesn't fit into what I'm going for (metallish look)
Mine never grew longer than a few inches, so I couldn't tie it back. It also tends to curl and irritate my ears, so I get my other half to run the clippers around my ears and down the sides of my neck, taking off a narrow strip about half an inch wide, usually about once a month so it looks neat when it's tied back.
