I don't post much, but I'm just letting everyone know that I'm finally getting close to where I was before I cut my hair last time. I had probably gotten to the 6 month mark when I cut last time, and I'm right at about 4 months. I only noticed the other morning walking to the laboratory, and I was getting upset because the wind was messing up my hair, and then I realized "WAIT! I finally have enough hair to be messed up by the wind!" haha.
The only hiccup in my growing phase right now is that I may have to trim it if I get an interview for graduate school (applying this Fall). I just need to make sure I look professional enough to get accepted, and from then on no worries, since I've seen tons of (male) grad students sporting long hair haha. Thanks again to everyone on this site giving support to each other.

I have heard hiccups many a time in my life. (Can't remember if they were "professional enough" however.) Guess I'll just have to accept the fact that I don't remember what I should have remembered that wasn't expected to be forgotten before knowing that it had or had not been remembered regardless of what the remembrance would have been. And now to remember where I put my "Looking-Glass."
I think you can safely forget your worries pertaining to whether or not to get a trim for your grad school interview. Any graduate school worth attending should be worried more about your academic ability, your interpersonal skills of articulation in the interview, and your probability of success based upon all things besides your hair length. Your GRE or MAT scores should matter more than whether or not your hair looks super "neat." Moreover, the keys to an interview are to dress well, to fix your hair in a comfortable yet restrained style, and to interview well. If you have to use some gel that day, do it. Look through some various men's fashion magazines, and you will see lots of guys with longer hair looking very good in whatever ad or fashion shoot in the publication. Use these as examples for your big day.
Thanks for the advice, and I completely agree with what should be important during the interviews. I didn't mean it to come across as that I will be cutting my hair short again to look more professional. What I meant was that if I am still in the awkward phase, I may need some sort of light trim to make it more manageable for the interview process so it doesn't look too crazy (but sacrificing as little length as possible).
Although I do share your sentiments about what SHOULD be important during an interview, I still have to be aware that prejudice exists and that one ignorant person could potentially bar me from getting into my dream school. I'll post a pic if it actually ends up that I get an interview (around January) so that'll be a good 7 or 8 months of growth to deal with. Thanks again for the advice!
Indeed I can't remember the last time you posted. So if I have this correct you grew your hair then cut it, and are growing it again and are at the point you were before and may cut it again.
I thought the whole point of school was what went "IN" your head not "ON" your head. I think Matt B's post makes the point quite well. Hopefully you can find a hairstyle with your current length that looks neat and tidy. If you have the time post a pic and we may be able to offer suggestions.

You have my summary right, but I'm not considering really cutting it again drastically, only a slight trim IF it is needed when interview time rolls around. If anything maybe I can just skip any trims and splurge for a stylist to just make my hair look really good for a day.
I share your sentiments about what the interview should be about (and it is), I'm just wanting to look as professional as possible for this, so I want to minimize the awkwardness of the awkward stage.
Why don't you share a picture with us and we can see.
I'm not quite sure how a slight trim will minimise the awkwardness of the awkward stage? Anyone else found that when they went through the awkward stage?
Cheers,

I'm actually away on a 10 week research internship, without any way of adding photos to my computer (I always forget SOMETHING when I leave on big trips). But, when I get back I'll post something to show what I'm working with.
*This is all best case scenario as well, just hoping I even GET an interview!
What does school has to do with your hair.
I entered Bible College with my long hair.
Keep up you hair growth friend

Keep in mind that the right grad school can make your future, but that getting in isn't the end of the road. I would not cut my hair now if that will give a false impression of what you think is the look you will have whil there. Look, if you cut it and then get in and find your mentor, advisor, or head of dept expects you to keep it shorter, then that person could mess up your whole experience. If they see you and accept you as you are, so much the better. But all that said, if a short haircut, even if you had to keep it short for a while, assures you a great future in th field you want to be in, with "your freak flag flying" for the next 30 or 40 years, then consider what is most important and go from there. Good luck.
No offense man but I think you won't grow much if you'll keep it up like this. And I think you will be accepted in school no matter how's your hairstyle. Go ahead, do the interview and keep growing your hair staying away from scissors!

Hehe, thanks, I know well since I used to go to school with my old "Peacock" style. XD And they never told me anything about it.
