In light of Nyghtfall's recent announcement of a trim, I just wanted to remind everyone of a great technique for removing split ends and maintaining longest length.
Take a small amount of hair and twist it. Some hairs are longer than others, and the short ones will stick out. While they are sticking out this way, the splits are easy to find. Do this under a bright light for best results.
Evening up the bottom should be considered a different operation than removing split ends. Splits don't occur just at the end of the longest growth. Using the above technique, it is possible to rid yourself of all split ends while maintaining a natural bottom line (what is it really called, anyway -- I guess for people like Coyote Pup and me, "bottom line" could be taken more than one way [for that matter so could "natural bottom line" ]). I hope all that punctuation didn't confuse you.
