Yes, i could not believe it, too !
But it is true ! In the Gameshow "Schüler-Lehrer-Duell" was a Teacher with a great Ponytail !
I have long hair (and a great pony when I tie it back), and I'm a teacher! I wasn't too sure if it would be accepted when I first began growing it, but no one of any importance has ever made a comment.
If they allow student to have long hair, then I guess they can't say much about teachers with long hair!
I'm also a teacher, at the middle school level. My pony's almost to my shoulder blades now and growing. The kids think it's cool, and as Mick said, no one of any importance has commented negatively. I'm just doing my job well and earning respect for that, as it should be.
My Physics teacher (well, when I took Physics anyway) had long hair. It's not as long as it used to be with him now but it is still long. He has a type of mullet and a full blown beard as well!
YES! Good old Gregory. Or "Jesus" as he's known to the lower school.
I, too, am a high school teacher with 8 years length of long hair. Generally, I keep it loose but once in a while I'll tie it back. I get mixed reactions with the students, some would like to see it cut and others thinks it's "cool". Personally, if they think it's long now, wait another five years or so. Many great mathematicians sported long hair, I tell them.
As I have said here before, I am also a teacher with long hair. I teach Latin and Greek, so I tell my students from time to time that for the Greeks, long hair and beard (I also have a beard) indicated wisdom--smiling of course.
