Hi there,
I have been growing my hair out for around 5 years now and it is now about 3 inches below my shoulder blades. I have a really thick head of hair and over the past few months I have found it a lot more work to look after it. Is it just me or have others found that at around this length their hair becomes more labour intensive too. I had wanted to grow another 6 - 9 inches but now I am not so sure!
Not especially for me. My hair reaches almost below mid back at 3 years and it doesn't seem to be an issue when it comes to difficulty concerning labor and maintenance. Though, it could be because of my hair type, straight, but I don't know exactly. Sometimes I forget it's as long as it really is.
H.
Thanks a lot for your comments. I will have to see how things pan out over the next few months!
That sounds very impressive. Why don't you share a picture with is us and perhaps comment better.
Cheers,

Hello Red Sun, my hair never has been a lot of work. Wash, condition, air dry, brush, simple. Put it in a tail for work.
The only thing that bothers me is the hair in the drain.

Or in my case, after the aformentioned here by Paul, braid it and forget it.

I don't find long hair much work, and it's a lot longer than that. OTOH, when it was about shoulder length it was hard to get it to stay where I wanted it. It also depends on your hair type. Mine has never been thick, and is wavy, so the longer I grow it the better it behaves.

due to its tendancy to get knots and severe tangles. My hair is an extremely tangle prone mass of straight, wavy, and curly hairs. The multiple mixed hair types are the reason it is so problematic. I have never met anyone in my entire lifetime that has as wide a variety of hair types on one head as I have. My hair is far less than ideal to grow really long, but I did it anyway. I keep multiple hair bands on it 98% of the time to keep knots and severe tangles to a minimum. (see pic) If I didn't do this, wearing it loose instead, I would have to keep it at about shoulder blade length. That would mean cutting 2/3 of it off. I am not willing to do this.
You probably have it easy compared to me. Really long hair reqiures a lot of patience to maintain. This is especially true with mixed hair types.

Hi Mr. Sun,
I'd be lying if I didn't say that my hair when it got longer than my shoulder blades isn't at least "SOME extra work" now, --- it's all an issue of it being, "in proportion to its length & other factors"...
When my hair was at or above sholder-blade length, for example, I didn't have to be as keenly on the lookout for split, damaged, or broken ends. Now that my mane is around belt-length, though, I have to check weekly, using the "Search & Destroy" method of chasing after the individual offenders and cutting them off above the damaged area.
I love the riual of brushing my hair when it's dry, stimulating the scalp to improve blood circulation (which helps nourish the hair roots, as well as just plain feels good on the scalp), --- as well as helps to distribute the scalp's natural oils down the hair shaft. BUT, the longer my hair gets, the more I have to start this ritual carefully by making sure the ends are fully untangled, fisrt.
Same with shampooing & conditioning: I enjoy the ritual of it, especially when I have the luxury of having plenty of time to do a thorough and nice job of it. BUT, the longer my hair has gotten, the more the word, "thorough" has begun to mean EVEN MORE TIME (lol)!!
Another factor that has happened for me as my hair has gradually gotten longer than shoulder-blade length is that I no longer wear my hair loose as I use to do. To protect it from getting tangles all too easily, nowadays I either wear it in a braid, a bun, or a segmented ponytail... only once in a rare while will I wear it loose during the day anymore.
Other than the above adjustments that I've had to make along the road to belt-length, it's definitely not anything "unbearable" re. the amount of additional work that has to go into having looooonger hair; but, again, it is in my humble opinion, SOME additional work, --- although I still consider it, "a labor of love!"

Hello and congratulations for your 5 years of growth.
My hair isn't that long since I'm still growing it out but it sure takes a lot more than it used to when I had it short.
But I don't mind.

My hair grows slowly too
