I found a photo on a Flickr page yesterday of some of the longest (and nicest) dreads I've seen to date.
For those with a short terminal length, dreads are certainly one way to grow one's hair beyond terminal.
That's an impressive picture, even though I'm not a big fan of dreadlocks! I just don't like the look so much.
But you made me curious, what do you mean with "For those with a short terminal length, dreads are certainly one way to grow one's hair beyond terminal." ? I know almost nothing about dreadlocks.

With dreads, the hairs literall lock together. Therefore, one doesn't experience the shedding that one does with natural hair. Even if the hair is no longer in its follicle, it's still with you. With dreads, one can essentially grow hair to an unlimited length. I've posted a second photo of a guy with dreads...although his aren't as nearly as well-kept as the first photo. They, however, are about a foot longer, approaching knee-length.
That guy definitely looks a lot like Brian Fair, from the band Shadows Fall. I personally think dreads look badass, but they just aren't for me.. :D

I don't have any information on the guy in the photo but I think his hair would qualify as "Super-Long Dreads"...
Another guy with super dreadlocks is Tran Van Hay from Vietnam who, in 2004, had a 6.2 metre (20 foot) single dreadlock. There is a video of him on YouTube:
My apologies if either of these have been posted previously, I have not seem them here before.

Oops, I posted that in the wrong place, it was supposed to be in response to the original post by Jon in Indiana...

Oops, forgot to post the picture..
I really like the look of dreads. Ive been thinking about getting them for about 6 months now but keep going back and forth between wanting them and not.
With long hair already though its harder to get dreads. Id probably go in somewhere and get them artificially started if I ever did get them.
Ive done a headful of braids and thats the closest Ive come to dreads. I think I like knowing that I can, but not doing it, its kinda the same as cutting.
The length is nice, but never been a fan of dreads. They just look matted and grungy to me. Just my opinion, of course, your mileage may vary.
