I've been growing my hair out for well over a year now, and it is now happily unmanageable. I took advantage of the long holiday weekend (here in the US) to do some renovations around my studio - and kept my hair in a small ponytail so it wouldn't get in the way. As a result, I looked short-haired again. My studio neighbor is the ONLY other longhaired guy in my building, and he's had a substantial ponytail as long as I've known him. His inquiry upon seeing me: "Did you get a haircut?! Wow, you look really good with short hair!" Now, I've grown used to this from others .... but am somewhat perplexed by the irony of hearing it from a guy whose hair is a lot longer than mine.
I think longhairs tend to encourage one another, but there's also the whole "honest opinion" thing also. He was simply stating his mind.
Personally, sometimes I do run across a guy who I think does look better with short hair, although it's not terribly often.
Your hair will almost certainly look better once it's progressed out of the awkward stage.
Lol, yeah that is bizarre.
I think I'd crack on his dumb ass ever time I saw him after a stupid remark like that.
The general consensus here is that longhairs are smarter. Obviously, not always the case. Me and this guy would be on a crash course.
That's for sharing.
Paul
I don't know. How is this remark really different than someone saying "Wow, you look really good with long hair!" ?
It could be he really looks good with short hair, so the guy is being genuine.
Hmmm... how is it different?
1 Who could possibly look really good with short hair? Ugh.
2 I like longhair.
3 I don't like longhairs who don't support other longhairs. With me, they rank almost as bad as Hair Nazis. (Those who make discriminatory rules about hair length and have a passionate hate for longhaired males.)
Admittedly, those last two are personal taste but really, what kind of idiot makes a crack like that to another man with longhair? Did it give lifobryan more confidence about himself? No, he was bewildered, as am I.
When are you going to post a pic Daan? I'd like to see if you really are a longhair.
Paul
Well, I think we've all seen some dudes with no hair on the crown of the head, and what hair they do have pulled back in a ponytail about 1 inch long.
I sure feel no need to tell anyone about their appearence to get then to change to my liking.
Frank
I've heard that before (even from a long hair) when I started growing mine out too. about a week later he cut his off anyway.
Mike
Thanks for the replies -
I don't think my neighbor was being malicious in any way. He's a really friendly guy, and I think he was just complimenting what he perceived to be a change in appearance. I thought it was ironic, because the ONE person I see on regular basis who MIGHT find a haircut to be an unfortunate choice, thought the opposite!
Tangent: pushing 40, I do have a bald spot on the crown. I'm not bald in the front, and unless one is looking directly at the top of my head, one really cannot tell. My hair is quite thick everywhere else, and it pulls into a 6-inch ponytail in back.
I mention this only because I often feel there is a bias against balding men who want to grow remaining hair long. Sometimes it seems that what people really mean to say is "you cannot grow your hair long because you have a bald spot."
Am I fond of the (g**d*m) bald spot? Hell no.
Do I like my hair long? Hell yeah.
Would I like the bald spot better if the rest of my hair were short? Absolutely not.
Would I like my hair short if the bald spot were not there? Absolutely not.
So there .....
...my wife brings that up all the time. She'll ask if I'm trying to cover up for the fact that I have a bald spot. I tell her no, it doesn't bother me, I just like/want my hair to be long. I'm not hiding anything, nor am I trying to look any age other than 54
