Hi there,
Well I've just done my good deed for the day and donated another unit of my blood. We do that 3 times a year in the UK and so far I've donated 30 units.
I was just wondering if any other people donate blood here?
I know that there are some people that donate plasma and get for it over in the USA.
The statistic is that only 6% of the population give here in the UK, so the other 94% better ask nicely next time!
Have you done a good deed today?
Cheers,
John.B
I used to donate, but have not been allowed medically for many years, but I would if I could!!
Hey John
That was nice of you to do. The ONLY time I tried giving blood (like about 40 years ago) I ended-up with a bad reaction and they told me not to do it again. Otherwise, this 'Ole Fossile would certainly be doing that to help someone out.
Justin~
Over here when you give blood or plasma they ask you the
"Gay question" and if the answer is yes you can't donate.
This came from the early 80's before we got better at dealing
and understanding HIV. You would think we would have gotten
past thatby now but no still in the dark ages.
So we are faced with the moral dilemma does one lie? Is one
capable of judging whether the risk is too high. Not all gay
people are sexually active to the degree of being risky. These
days they test the blood anyway so why continue with the charade.
I know many who choose to lie and I have no problem with it.
Cheers to you John for donating.

I would if I could. But, alas, because I lived in the UK between certain dates, I can't donate blood in New Zealand. I think it's BSE (CJD?) that there's a risk of me carrying.
Hi John,
Great OT topic to bring up, --- and good for you for donating your blood, a very worthy cause indeed!
I've donated my blood before also (although I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't done so very recently)...
When I was younger, one of my dance partners & I used to teach free beginning partner- and line-dance lessons in order to encourage more people to show up and come over to donate at a local SF blood center, --- and then after we were finished teaching and doing a little dance demo, then we'd donate ourselves, too.
Just don't ask me to "donate" my hair to anyone!

I used to donate every 8 weeks, partly good deed, partly to control my level of iron in my body. Lately I've been anemic, so they won't take my blood.

i give blood due to give next month again :P
Used to donate on a fairly regular basis, but haven't been able to lately due to some of the meds I use.
