Ok, so I don't post here a lot, but every so often I browse through to see if I can find any tips that would be useful.
I've been growing my hair for a couple years now. I managed to get through the awkward stage and get to a point where I can keep my hair in a ponytail (mostly).
The issue I'm experiencing though is that I have a lot of hairs in front and just behind the ears that just don't reach back far enough to stay in the tail. When I go outside, they fly all over the place (my shadow looks like a silhouette of Medusa). I normally dress business-casual, and a do-rag just doesn't fit with my day to day clothing style. Putting product in my hair just makes it so I have to wash it everyday.
Are there any other suggestions for controlling the "wispies" as my wife calls them?
Btw, my hair is about 12 inches long in back. If I can, I'll try and post a pic soon.
Howdy Ursinos,
After about another year or less of additional growth, you should be able to contain more of the "wispies" in the hair tie. It sounds like you're getting there. Keep up the good progress. Will look forward to a photo when you're ready.

I myself just cut the whispies off every once and a while. tommie
Hi tommie,
But, if you do that, then you are cutting off new hairs that are just starting to grow out! It's all part of the natural process of what happens after the old hairs have shed. Each individual hair on your head goes through a natural repetative cycle of: growth, reaching terminal length, a brief rest period, then falling out (which then makes way for the new hair coming back in again)...
Have you ever read Bill Choisser's article, "On Being A Longhair"? It's in the Links section. It's an EXCELLENT read! I highly recommend it, because it explains the hair growth process very thoroughly, --- as well as other helpful tidbits of information on Hair.
Take Care, --- and keep it growin'!

Great advice Ken.
Thanks, I'll make sure to read it through. The wispies only really bother me when I'm outside and the wind is blowing them all over the place. When I'm inside, they tend to stay put.
I'll look over the website and see if anything works.
This was covered about two weeks back, see:

A gentle spray when you want to maximise avoidance was the common thought
You should find it easier as your hair get longer, but because of a) new hairs just starting out on their journey and b) breakage you'll always have some wispies, and everybody I know with a ponytail of all ages and genders finds the same. Gel and spray can help, but I think it's something we have to get used to.
From one Gorgon to another, I've learned to live with the stray new hairs that don't want to stay in the tail, especially on humid days. I'm glad during the awkward phase I didn't succumb to the temptation to trim it, cut it, etc/ Hang in there. I just joke with my friends that my hair is going through puberty and is starting to get pubes haha. I find a really good conditioner is helping and not shampooing every day as well. keep us posted.
I only really shampoo every day if I've been sweating a whole lot and my scalp is really itchy (in the summer it's really bad for that). I really should start conditioning again, I ran out of conditioner a while back and keep forgetting to pick up more.
I'll keep that in mind as something that might help.
