Hi all. I have not been posting much. I have been working on art projects all month and have had little time to even check e-mail.
Im in the awk stage or sort of. I have very thick hair, but lately it's just looking ratty. Im not talking about cutting it, because I like it, but it just seems that the ends, especialy around my ears are really ratty looking. Like sort of jagged and (Im really not sure how to describe it) but, sort of crunchy looking. Like it's mostly uneven or messy looking. Not that I mind messy looks, but it looks unkept even though I maintain my hair well. Even stopped wearing the baseball cap because it was breaking my hair.
It could be the Awk blahs, or the Awkword stage blues, but I feel like I need to go to a hair dresser to shape it or take some of the volume out.
I have tried products and everything. My concern is that I do not want to prolong the awk phase. I know that by cutting it I will.
The dilema is that I have many social engagements coming up soon, and the hair...well it's sort of driving me crazy at this point. Not enough to cut it off, but enough to make me considder a trim.
Any thoughts? Is anyone else going through the same thing?
Hey there!
Don't worry, It's perfectly normal, I think everyone who grew his hair out has experienced it. I am experiencing it too. I guess the best thing is to wait some more time, if after that amount of time (it depends on how long is your hair now, you should post a pic) if you'll still be unsatisfied you can go ahead and get it fixed as you like. That's what I'm doing and my mission is to wait until January or February.

Ill post one tonight when I am home from work. It sort of flips around all wierd on me.
First off a pic of your current hair would be a big help in evaluating the situation.I cringe when the discussion turns to needing to see a hairdresser to work on your hair as a lot of the time its a disaster.Usually it never comes out the way you expected it.Anyway lets start with that pic and we can take it from there:)Cheers

Hi Mark,
I've had some very good experiences w/ hairstylists, --- as well as bad (my Y2K haircut of course being the worst). The trick is to go to someone who has an excellent reputation, preferably also having a longhair following (usually this starts with long-haired women).
Although technically it was my own fault that I cut my hair short in Y2K (I was the one who came in and asked for it to be cut off back then), hair stylists that take the time to give you a thorough consultation before doing any cutting usually means that this person is a good listener and is paying attention to your wishes. These kind of hair stylists also tend to cast a lot more $$$, --- but, they're worth it!
I had my hair trimmed several times during my awkward stages (BOTH times). The first time growing it out (during the early '90s), I probably did it more frequently than I should have; but, hey, it was my first time! In a way, I had fun trying out different "looks" and ways to style the ever-increasing lengths, --- although I admit that it slowed my progress down in even getting to ponytail length. The 2nd time I went through the awkward stage (which was after my infamous Y2K cut), I had MUCH LESS trims, --- and, when I did, I only cut off the bare minimum (asked for 1/2 inch off or less, which that stylist indeed did EXACTLY as I requested).
Sometimes a carefully thought-out and very professionally done trim helps someone going through the awkward stages emotionally "survive" better (under best-case scenario circumstances, at least). It did for me, at least. Having said that, though, I admit that horror stories abound more frequently and devastating than locust plagues, --- as well as ANY amount cut off only delays the goal of achieving ponytail length to taking that much longer.
It's too bad I never knew about MLHH back during the time of my Y2K haircut... Maybe I would have achieved knee-length by now (LOL)!!

PS - Looking forward to meeting you later this month!!
Hi Ken,
You made some excellent points about hairstylists as the impression I gave was that any trim or whatever would come out bad. That certainly is not always the case as I've had small trims over the years with no problems. The one time I did have a problem was way back in the 1980s when I tried a new stylist who took waaaaayyyy too much length off!Grrrrrrrrrr.Needless to say I was devastated to loose that much hair in that session.Fortunately hair does grow back as I never made a mistake like that again. I am now extremely careful about who touches my hair. The other hair blunder I made was getting a perm......BIG MISTAKE!The chemicals really wreaked havoc on my hair.Fortunately I got past that experience and just decided to leave my hair in its natural state.Anyway just be wary of hairstylists that you go to and make sure they fully understand what you want the finished product to look like. Also looking forward to seeing you later this month Ken:)Cheers

A picture is really needed before any sensible comment can be made.
We've all been there.....post a photo and you will receive lots of encouragement and some advise. We are our own worst critics.....chances are its not as bad as you think.
Hang in there !
WWT
(Im really not sure how to describe it)
A photo would do the trick as the others have commented.
I'll check back tomorrow for a pic, have a look and offer some
suggestions.

Post a picture and let us see :-)

I'll keep vigil.
