I live between Sydney and Newcastle in Australia and I've noticed recently signs of hope among some of Generation Z! Boys from mid elementary school to senior high and letting their hair grow. Younger kids have pageboy type bobs and some teenagers have hair as long as mid-back. Anyone noticed similar trends?
Hi Ned,
I've noticed the same thing here in the USA. Kids are treading to longer hair styles, mostly just shaggy but it's improvement. Hopefully this means the hair nazis (Hi Paul), are loosing ground and influence in our society.
Bruce
Damn right Bruce! :-) Down with hair nazis!!!!!
Paul
I've noticed it too. As most of you may know, our boys (mine and Pauls) all have long hair. Paul made an impact last year with their school and now they are not enforcing the "hair rule" at their school. As a result, there are a lot of boys, especially at the high school, with long hair.
Another thing that I have noticed is that there is a town a few minutes away from us (this is another school within the same "hair nazi" district) where some of the boys are starting to grow their hair out. (I go through this town to pick up the baby from daycare). I'm go through right after school, so I get to see the kids walking/riding bikes.
Yeah for new longhairs!!!!!!!
I can tell that just from watching the Disney Channel. It seems like half the young fellows on there have longer hair. DC seems to be a huge influencer/reflector of young interests, so I suspect the populous is following accordingly.
There were 2 males with midback length hair in my class last year. One got a "shaggy" hairstyle this year and the other seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth. Hopefully in a while I can add one to that list :)
I've noticed it a bit too. It seems like people's attitudes about long hair have changed a bit too. Younger people are associating long hair with guitar playing and being a musician instead of something girls have. I remember a little kid at my pool telling me that my long hair was "really cool, like the guys in Dragonforce". It gave me a chuckle, and is a big difference from being told you look like a girl.
I actually got the exact same comparison not too long ago, it was pretty funny. I don't mind though, I'll take that over just about any other comparison, especially since I do play the guitar :)
I have also noticed that there seem to be more guys growing out their hair, there's a few new longhairs at my school and several that are in the awkward stage who are probably growing theirs out.
Hello Ned of Oz.
I live only a few hours drive south-west from you in the Australian Capital City of Canberra.
I too have noted around where I live in the last 12 months that more and more younger guys in their teens and 20's and a quite a number of older guys are growing longish hair and that there is a lot of them going around with the awkward phrase shaggy hairstyles and is a lot more noticable at late.
Over a year ago I didn't notice as many. We can only hope that these guys keep growing out there hair and moving away from the sterile, boring, conservative, repressed short hair look.
Anyway your not along in thinking that my friend. Glad to see another homegrown Aussie on board the MLHB!
Duncan
Hi Duncan,
LOL, that was the best description of short-hairs that I've ever read on this board, --- funny as hell (and so true, so TOTALLY TRUE)!!!
Thanks for giving me a great big dung-eating grin for today!

I havent noticed anyone in my school newly growing out their hair (still the maybe 6 with actual long hair and the close to half the school with shaggy hair).
I have noticed more older guy with long hair in the past couple weeks. I was at Roy Rogers the other day and a guy with a mid-back braid came in. Then at the hospital yesterday (I have the flu) there were 3 other guys with long hair.
