So, I've been looking to get into Bushcraft in the past little while. I haven't actually gotten out into the woods yet (it's pretty wet out there, and getting to woodland around here is kinda hard)
I don't know if this question has ever been asked, but are there any avid backpackers/bushcrafters/campers here? How do you deal with your long hair when moving around in the bush? Do you just use a do-rag?
Hi, look over at www.buffwear.com and watch some of their videos and see if it would fit your needs.
those look kind of cool. I may have to order a couple
Great question !
Many of us, while not really attempting to survive in the wilderness, do need to survive our working conditions. As a geologist I get into some nasty places. I put it in a tail, a tight bandanna secured with a sweatband and top it off with a goofy hat (that geologists tend to wear). It creates an image worthy of a reality show ! More importantly, the arrangement provides good protection.
Good Luck in your adventures ! Looking forward to seeing a photo of you "geared up"

Hi there!
First, if I'm going to be doing lots of activity, moving my hair around, maybe getting things in it(for example running in the woods), I will braid my hair to keep everything in place.
However, I know someone who takes hair band things(not sure how long) and puts them in, but they kind of follow down the length, so it looks like a braid with the band over every crease. Yeah, it's kind of confusing, hard to describe. I actually don't even know what's going on, but I intend to soon ask her to show me how to do it. If it works out well, hopefully I'll remember to share it with you all. It holds stuff in place, but is faster and easier than a braid! I know, woohoo!
If anyone else here knows how to do that, feel free to mention it. I sure am clueless at this point. :)
Considering that I have not yet gotten the hang of self-braiding (though I did my first successful rope-twist braid today WOOHOO!) I'm anticipating having a fair number of issues getting my hair snagged on stuff lol. It's the one thing that has me contemplating getting it cut (but it's not a serious contemplation at the moment, thankfully).
When I was young I went on a 5-week NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) backpacking course in the Bridger Wilderness of Wyoming; but, nowadays the closest thing to what you're asking about is what I do whenever I have to be in and around a lot of thorny roses, especially at winter-pruning season time. I wear my hair in a bun a lot; but, whenever I know in advance that I'll be ventering into a very over-grown garden full of many many roses to have to prune, I wear a hat and tuck my hair up inside of it.
