its so damn dry and messey and i feel like it didnt grow over the last month.
your hair looks about right for curly hair, its gonna take a little more for length to be noticable. As far as dryness, try cutting down on shampoo (people here use anything from everyday to almost never) and start using conditioner everyday. Like I said, your having curly hair is going to make your growth seem slower, but its not. You have to be patient with hair...
It grows at about a half inch a month. Theres nothing thatll speed that up other than eating right, and even then not by much. In the first month from short hair the percent which your hair grows is alot more than later so it SEEMS to slow down, but it wont for a long time.
You're probably just overreacting to your first time growing it out like most people do.
Check out some of the links in the links section.
Happy Growing,

If you start from a buzz or a very short hair cut then your hair will grow like that.
It just SEEMS to not grow but it actually is. You are in the awkward stage. Keep growing and you will see improvement.
To help with dry hair buy conditioner and condtion your hair after shampooing. You can leave it in your hair for a little while if you want before washing off.
Take another picture in 3 months and you will see that your hair in the front DID get longer. You can't rush growth.
You have the same hair type I do, except mine is much thicker. No matter what i do, my hair is extremely dry and broken. I've just decided there is nothing I can do about it. My hair won't cover my ears either. It just flips out above them. I also have the mullet type problem. I just went to the barbers recently for an undercut to make mine less puffy on the sides. Don't cut it. I've cut mine numerous times. It just grows in that way again.
Hi Jack,
Your hair is growing just fine. Keep in mind that if you started from short hair, your hair in the back will always look longer because the hairline is much lower on the head. In reality, all of the hair on your head is growing at the same rate.
Unruly hair is a normal part of the "awkward stage" (a period of 1 to 1 1/2 years when the hair doesn't lie flat and seems to head off in every possible direction but down.) Also, since you have curly hair, it will take longer to gain length since the hair will wrap around instead of heading straight down. Once it gets long enough, though, gravity will take over and your hair will look great!
Maybe you could post your hair care routine and we could try to help with your dryness problem. My advice is to trying washing with shampoo less often and make sure you're using lots of conditioner when washing.
Finally, I'll direct you to Bill's (a member of this board) site:

It's full of lots of great info and advice for new growers.
Best of luck,

Funny thing, but MANY a guy growing-out their hair for the 1st time think something is wrong. Relax. To my eyes anyway, ALL looks perfect and just as it should be if left to grow-out by itself. It WILL even-itself out automatically as it grows longer.
One thing. Are you using tons of conditioner? If not, start doing so when you wash and even get some spray-in conditioner.
Great start. Bravo!
Hey jack and everyone, been coming to this board for years but this is my first time posting. Jack I used to have very long hair (its just kinda shaggy now) and i wanted to post cause i think your hair is very similar to my own. Even when my hair was very long, it never grew round the sides. In fact i have curly auburn hair, but this hair is very dark and almost looks afro. Like yours, when growing my hair out i had to trim certain parts such as the back, to allow the sides to catch up. People think growing your hair is awkward, but when it only grows about 2 inches on each side, it becomes 5 times as awkward (and youre still left with a kind of undercut). Just keep it going mate and wear hats when its pissing ya off.
Heres an image of me when my hair was long, as you can see i covered up my weird hairline pretty well. And yes i was born with no face...
you got a realy good looking hair
do you think mine will grow like that too?
your hair lengh is just what i want, how much time from now would it take my hair to grow like that.
Its hard to say man, my hair grows pretty fast, but because of my weird hairline it takes that a wee bit longer to I get to 'ponytail length'. From your length now, it might take a year or 2 (for the front bits that is). But as Im sure anyone on the site would tell ya, its all to do with how fast your hair grows (an average of 6 inches a year?). Just get yourself a nice paddy cap and you'll be sound. It was a real pain in the arse to get my hair to the length I wanted, but if ya want it long its just something you have to do.
Heres how my hair looks now:

by the way my hair falls alot it kinda scares me like o combed my hair and like 30 or something hair falls off
Normal, i would however suggest combing your hair starting at the ends and working your way up, so comb like the last inch or two of your hair then up another inch, this way you dont push all the tangles down your hair into one big tangle
Also as long as you dont hear any hair ripping or snapping while you comb you are doing ok, if you do hear those sounds then you should probably work out the tangles
i think the only thing you can do wrong with growing hair ..... is cutting it :P it will pass in time buddy dont worry
hay guys i need to ask you another thing now my mother tells me that my hair is all freaking damaged she tells me maybe its because this and that, and that my hair doesnt have any oils and is so dry AND damaged, i tell her its just a phase and she tells that its freaking damaged.and other then that some people are telling me i need to get a haircut and my hair makes me frustrated damn it i wished my hair was more straight i almost never saw straigh hair having a problem and it never looks awkward lol anyway do you think its that damaged or thats a phase or maybe shes right.
hmm...
It may be damaged, but probably not for as short as it is. Just start using conditioner more and shampoo less and your hair should start to be softer and healthier.
and remember, DON'T CUT IT!!!!!
