Ok. So this is about the 10th time that I have tried to grow my hair long. In high school I had long hair and LOVED it. It seemed to really fit with my personal identity; it is how I still picture myself almost 20 years later. However, every time I try to grow my hair long I get to that awkward stage, my girlfriends and boss start teasing me, and I end up cutting it. So here I am trying once again to grow it out and I am freaking DETERMINED this time.
I know that there are quite a bit of people here on this forum who have gone through this and succeeded. I am just wondering what you did to make it through. I know I shouldnt care what others think, and my boss is just jealous because he is bald (ha!).
One last thing, I just wanted to thank everyone who has posted here. You guys are a great inspiration. You rock- so keep it up.

I cant think of much more to say other than just put up with and ignore all the idiots who think what they have to say is important. I still get tons of people asking me when Im gonna cut my hair, and things like that. It comes from people at my school, family, a couple strangers. But between the fact that they dont like my hair, dont like my music, dont like my overall style, or my attitude and opinions about certain things I really dont care what they have to think. Long story short, I live in a pretty conservative, conformitive community with some people like me, but a bunch of closed minded assholes and have just learned to ignore them or f*ck with them back. Its just something that comes with the hair.
The first thing you need to know is, you know who you are. you are much better than what you girlfriends and your boss tease you about.
Number two is if people don't respect you, (no matter what hair looks like) are they really your friends?
when they tease you about your hair when you try growing it long, tell them to shutup for thier jokes are getting old. As for your boss have a sit down chat with him or her and explain that these teasing are not very professional nor polite. That should solve your problem. if your boss does not listen to you go to his or her boss about the issue.

Hi Robb, well at some point in everyone live there comes a time where you will need to put your foot down and say NO More. If your out from under Mom & Dads roof, then give it a try, test yourself.
I tease my balding co-workers that I could provide them with a comb-over if they needed it.

I had this problem long ago an conquered it. It's tricky during the grow-out stage, but you can minimize the issues by getting a decent blunt trim as soon as possible and combing it back. Once it's long, keep the ends trimmed, use high quality shampoos and conditioners and keep it in a super good looking style. For years, I wore mine in a below-shoulders blunt cut, slightly side-parted, almost always loose. It was a common style, just not that common for guys. But because it looked great on me, people stopped saying anything and accepted it as my identity.
The first thing you have to get past is just people adjusting to your looking different, but that happens after awhile. People tend more to dislike "bad hair" than long hair.
