Hello all :)
It's going into summer in Australia, and I am wondering about ideas to cope with the heat - This is the first year I have had hair long enough to do more than a halfhearted pony with (It's about 30cm (1ft) all over, no trims since I started from a buzz-cut). Its getting unpleasantly hot to wear already, and we havent hit a real warm day yet (Summer gets to the mid 40's, or 100-110f).
I have been doing some horrible looking buns (my skill, not an opinion on buns) for around the house, but I need some ideas I can use for when I am out, working, and generally in public that I can do with my mediocre skills. Some guides for more challenging ideas that are still plain looking would be good if anyone has favourites, most google results tend to be fairly feminine styles - messy buns, elegant braids, and the like.
Cheers,
Matt.
G'day Matt,
I too live in Australia and know how hot our summers here can get. To cope with the heat or when doing physical activity I restrain the hair in a low bun at the back of head about a couple of inches above the nape of the hair line.
Nothing feminine about a low bun - I use one of those elastic hair bands and then double over the tail to keep it out of the way.
Stays out of the way during the day and allows the back of the neck to sweat all it likes without the hair being in the way.
Best,
Duncan
Hey Matt,
The bun is a good idea, but you can also try hair jewelry. Hair jewelry makes tails look a bit cooler and less plain.

A member of the board posted this a while ago, and I saved the link.
oooh, I do like them :) Thankyou for that link
They aren't quite what I was thinking of to keep my hair up off my neck, but they are an ideal bit of bling for a simple ponytail :D
Anyone ordered from them in the past?
How about an unelegant braid?
A bun or a simple braid would be fine - just I can't seem to do them without them looking all lopsided - I can do them with the front of my hair where I can see it in my mirror, but it doesn't translate to motions behind my head.
To give you an idea, I am still happy when my pony isn't off to one side first try :( - its probably just a matter of practice, but my hair seems to have a mind of its own.
Hi Matt
It gets that hot down here sometimes and I just put mine in a tail but never because of the heat. Just to keep it out of the way when I'm working.
I don't see longhair as being any hotter than short, I've always thought that as an excuse women use when they're ready to cut their hair.

I've had good success with a queue - make a ponytail and braid it down, using 2 hair ties total. The bundled hair offers little to no insulation. Starting with a pony tail gives me an easier time getting it braided and getting it to stay braided during the day. It looks sleek and not particularly masculine or feminine IMO.
When I get tired of my hair being gathered at the base of the skull, I make 2 pigtail queues and braid them together a couple inches from the back of my head. This leaves the center ventilated but ends in a single rope of hair. It takes 2 or 3 practice tries but once learned is like a riding a bike.

I use Goody Stay Put hair ties(item#30251) as they have the best holding I've found without any metal to snag.
