I was home alone last night and thought I'd experiment with a four-strand braid. I thought it would be a lot more difficult than it turned out to be, and to be honest, I'm pretty pleased with the result. I'll post a pic of my second attempt. I didn't have the camera at home with me which meant I had to use the phone, so apologies for the poor quality.
I tied my hair up in a tail to start with, then sectioned into four and, starting from the left went "over, under, over" and kept repeating that, always from the left, until I ran out of hair. I had a couple of issues with maintaining tension throughout, but, on the whole, although it's a little kinky in places, I like it, and I think that with a bit of practice, I could get it looking good enough to wear out.
From what I can see it looks great and that's certainly an interesting braid and it's not one I've done before. I look forward to the updated picture. I'm sure resident braid expert Jason has tried one of those before. Still it's another great way of doing something with longhair and you can't do that when it's short.
Thanks for sharing,

Thanks, John.
It's all because of one of AndrewB's recent posts. It got me thinking about experimenting. It's a bit fiddly at first, but once I got the hang of it, it went fairly easily. It's one of those that's probably a lot easier to do on someone else's hair than your own.
Cool looking braid and well done from what I can see. That's a great idea experimenting with braiding when you are bored since you have more time to get it right.I'd like to try that someday but am always hesitant for some reason. Thanks for posting that as you spent your time well last night.Cheers my friend

Thanks, Mark,
Well, the other option was going to the pub, and playing with your hair's better for your liver - not to mention your pocket. Have a go at it. It's much easier than you think. The hardest part is actually visualising what you have to do.
If that is the product of boredom, I can't wait to see what you do when you are inspired !! I think it has a more masculine look than the standard 3 strand braid. Fantastic !
Thanks for Sharing

That was the second attempt. The first one didn't go quite as well, but it didn't look too bad, so I had another go. Practice makes perfect as they say. If I keep at it, I may get it looking just right.
However, it's made me start thinking about a five-strander now. Not sure if I've got enough fingers for that though, but watch this space!
Hey there! I'm not a big fan of braids but I must admit yours looks really good. Keep it up!

Thanks, Andrea,
I usually wear my hair in a braid at work, so I'm getting pretty good at the three-strander, but I felt like a bit more of a challenge. I like the look of the four-strander too and it doesn't take much longer than the three-strand, so I think it's maybe time for a change.
awesome, you inspired me to retry 4 strands. I learned it in about a half hour on the side of my head, but still cant pull it off in the back
Nice one! Keep at it and good luck. I find it's easier if I close my eyes mthe first few times. It seems to help with visualisation if that makes any sense.

That 4 strand braid is gorgeous, Viking. Those are not easy to do. I will have to try one of those with my hair. Just lovely.

Thank you very much. Compliments are always gratefully received. I don't know if I'd like to try it on hair your length, which is almost double the length of mine. I'd have to take a coffee break halfway through! Saying that, it's less tiring than a herringbone braid.
One thing I did notice though is that it takes up a fair bit more of the length than a three-strand braid. I don't think it's quite enough to stop me getting it caught between my back and a chair though. I wonder if you can do a four-strand French plait... I might experiment with that tonight. I can visualise it, but it could turn out to be a nightmare! Watch this space.
for self attemp that is a nice braid

Nice looking braid for a beginner Viking, wear it out with pride!
