Can someone explain to me the difference between dyeing and henna treatment? What's the procedure, and what are the comparative benefits and drawbacks?

Im not an expert on it but as far as I know:
regular dye:
can make hair darker, ligher, or any random color
damages the hair because it goes into the hair
henna:
can only make hair darker
doesn't damage the hair because it sits on top of your hair
Thats as far as my knowledge goes other than they are both permanent.
