As you know, I am growing out my hair and since six years I am interested in long hair for men. My motivation came in 2003 with the fall collection of YSL, designed by Tom Ford. About 90% of his models had long hair and the combination of the beautiful clothes and the long hair, was the start for my interest in long hair. You can see the collection on the following website:
http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/_catwalks/Default.aspx?page=1&idsezione=4&idstagione=5&idmarchio=1683
Since then I observed a lot of more longhairs and I visited the MLHH as lurker, and now I am feeling very good in this longhair community.
When did you get interested in long hair, when did you decide to grow out your hair and why?
I didn't
That's a long time to be interested.
Oh, so that's how it happened.
Saw it. In one of these fashion shows one of the models actually fell-off the walkway. Dangerous business it can be. Looks as if they work so hard they must not have enough time to eat enough which could prove harmful to their health.
Glad you are feeling ok and please don't deny yourself enough food. Hey! How about posting a photo of your success to date so we can all see? That would be most nice of you for sure. And, we always encourage guys when they give updates. :-)
In grade school. Cause I liked it.
I first started growing it in beginning of 2005, looking up to some of my very good acquaintances who were longhairs. When it got in the awkward stage in October, my father suggested that I cut it and I had a crew cut.
Next time: started in February 2006 and, with occasional trims,
grew it until it reached a bit below my shouldreblades, but under the suggestion of my parents who complained of it being overtly damaged, I cut it again in August 2008, and had one last trim in November the same year.
Afterwards, in a mixture of despair, self-accusation, and anger towards my parents and society, I SWORE I'd never again succumb to anyone's order, suggestion, or blackmail of me cutting my hair. I decided I would have it cut only if it's my very wish, independently of anyone else. You can check my current hair-length in the 'Proud to be a Serb' thread which I made a few days ago.
I started my journey into long hair as soon as possible. My parents were, and my dad still is, really into the counterculture, metal, rock n roll, etc. So I grew up being a little 4 year old with a mullet down to my shoulderblades. this got up to a little past my shoulders in early elementary school. End of 1st grade (summer '00) we moved from the suburbs of Baltimore, MD to Hagerstown, MD. Up here is definately more conservative and over time my hair just got shorter, never 'short', but shorter. I would never let it get too short, because even then I knew it was a big part of my identity.
Throught middle school it stayed at about 2-3 inches all over. Then in august 06 I got a shitty haircut. This was followed by another one on Feb. 15 2007. After that one I decided no more haircuts for a long time.
Then, about 4-5 months ago when I was bored one night I somehow stumbled across Bill's site. I read that and then found a link here. I lurked for about half a day then started posting. This board made me realize that my hair needed to be longer.
Then, in late august something clicked overnight and I went full out rebellious hippie. I was already in love with the music. But now I like, and create, the art; the music; the attitude; and the style. My school binders are covered in peace signs, smiley faces, peace, love, and random drawings. As of last tuesday even my chucks have quotes and pictures all over them. I decided that music and art are the only career options for me, and I'll do anything to get that. I've been moving towards a more natural lifestyle, which also includes hair. Now I'm on a weird line between natralism and psychedelic over-extravagance.
I've recently decided to learn as many ways to braid/bun/ponytail/etc. as possible, wear them all to school, and see what happens. I'm also going full out terminal length, no trims, fairytale ends with my hair. Also, my hair is too long for school pictures and I'm extremely proud of that!
I also would turn down billions if the only requirement was that I get a haircut, even if I could grow it back. I'd rather be homeless. Who I am is much more important than anything else to me and I express that whenever I can. Even down to "FUCK YOU!" written in big black letters on the side of my shoe. I don't give a damn and it's the happiest I've ever been!
Damn, I gotta save a copy of this to my computer for when this thread comes up in a couple months...
told you it was long, hope I didn't forget anything,
~Jarvis~ ; )
One month after the buzz I looked at how cool long hair looked on some if the bands I liked and decided to let mine grow.
My son was a surfer and moved to Maui. I went over there 2003 and his hair was to his waist. It really looked good so I have been letting mine grow. Now my son has short hair. He runs a sportfishing boat and I have the long hair. Tommie
Haircuts never seemed right to me. A few years ago I got into metal and a 8 months ago I decided that I'd grow it and not give a damn if people didn't like it.
I became interested in college, though I suspect I had some kind of subconscience desire for long hair before that. I always had shortish hair and then along came college. My first year I had short hair, but I looked like every other guy, except the hippies... Anyways out of the blue a bunch of my friends, and even one of my cousins started growing and pestering me to grow mine. I resisted for a while, I was afraid of my parent's reaction more than anything. I eventually gave in and grew it out. To my surprise my parents actually supported it, especially my dad who always wanted long hair. Over the years I've had it long and short, I eventually came to realize I don't feel right with it short, long hair is a part of who I am. This board helped me tons when I first started, and though I don't post as much as I would like, I love being part of this great community!
I guess I've wanted long hair all my life, but my mom would always make me get it cut when I was younger. Now I am 16 years old, and I have been growing my hair about 15 months, and I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks.
My interest in long hair really took off when I took up the guitar and started listening to rock/metal music. Long hair is essential to the rock n'roll genre, as well as headbanging!
(Headbangers with buzz cuts are just morons.)
Similar to what Jarvis said, I have been getting in touch with my rebellious side over the last year, and basically I just said screw how society thinks how short I should keep my hair! I'll have it as long as I please!
But my biggest reason for long hair is it's just a part of me I suppose. I've always hated haircuts. I'm just not myself without long hair, it is part of me.
Anyways, this post has gone long enough.
Headbanger 4 life!!
Luke.
I decided try long hair after a horrid experience at the local salon back in December of '08. Up until now I've always had fades, crew cuts etc... After discovering what you can do with long hair and all the different styles, I quickly became fond of it. I'm still in the growing out era but I'm loving every inch it grows. Classic length here I come :)
I was interested in male longhairs all my life, and it was in spring of 2007 when I decided to start growing out my hair. Even then, when I was in high school, I tried to grow out my hair but got nowhere.

*Wall of text incoming*
Well, for a start I'd like to say hello to everyone. I'm almost a year long lurker and now I finally decided to post. The reason was that I'm not a great fan of this old school like forum interface but I finally got used to it!
On topic now, I started growing my hair about 20 months ago. Why? Well I'm a huge PC games fan especially RPGs (I know..I know..what a nerd) and on top of that a die hard extreme metal fan again with a particular passion for the most freakiest subgenre that is black metal. So basically it helps expressing my personality and interests. Perfect combination you might say for a asocial mystery guy, since mind you there are few to none longhairs in my university. I don't care much about what others say, and due to my body size I really get very few negative comments and when I do I ingnore them since most of them come from girls. I like my hair, of course it could be better but damn if there is one thing i REALLY hate now, that is the wind!
As a kid, i used to watch WWF Wrestling...the Ultimate Warrior was awesome and had long hair...then came along The Undertaker. These guys were my orig inspiration..
I always thought about having long hair but never too seriously....then the movie Interview With a Vampire came out and put a whole new face to long hair. The vampires in that movie looked PHENOMENAL with their long hair. Made long hair seem extremely alpha as well as elegant..
So here i am, 2 years into growing my hair and LOVE IT.
A lot of people point and laugh actually, which is okay, pisses me off, but then again, it makes me feel 'special'.
You should be proud of what you have grown out so far and such a beautiful colour and the shine in the sunlight is out this world. Keep in growing and keep in touch with us.
Cheers,
John.B
I always hated haircuts as a child and often wondered why boys hair was never as long as girls. I remember asking if boys hair would grow that long. I was told yes and then heard some choice words about hippies. Never hearing of them before I was quite amazed. "They don't cut their hair, live in the woods and don't bathe." (Sounded pretty good to a 6 year old.)
Because it was the 70's I fit right but I know if longhair was not in style then, I still would have grown it out.

I decided to grow my hair when I was about 14, mostly because I had recently gotten into metal and realized all of my favorite musicians had awesome long hair. Then the bassist of the band I was in at the time started growing his, so I thought "Heck, I'll do it too." Since then it's become a lot more meaningful to me, but before that time I really didn't think about or care about hair.
1968 --- at the age of --- 10 - yes 10 !!
I was really into the 1960's scene - a young 10 year old being into the music, I have an older brother and sister who loved the bands back then. So I started with a mop style - hair on my forehead, over my ears over the collar. About 3 years later I let is grow to the shoulders. And high school 1973-1974 - it went past my shoulders and has been there since. And why today ? I LIKE it ! I'm an IT Specialist - Technician/Engineer, I dress nice/clean - nobody cares....
