Hey Guys,
After reading through the thread on 'when did you decide to grow your hair long', I'm curious as to who inspired you to grow your hair?
For me, it came when my partner was watching the show True Blood on tv...I normally don't get into the whole vampire thing, and actually rolled my eyes at her when I walked into the room...but, I got hooked (great show)anyway, a few episodes into the series, the vampire Eric Northman, a longhair, is introduced. This guy has some great longhair, and back in the day, was a Viking...after seeing this scene I thought, 'hell yeah, keep those scissors away!!' My hair is at the awkward stage and although yeah, somedays it gets to me, I'm determined to stick it out - btw it's so not like Eric's either - wavy and black - I'm going to go for the Aragorn look ;)
I've been thinking of growing my hair long ever since I watched Lord of the Rings, but this was 'I start now!' inspiration I needed.
A notable mention also goes to Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis in Heat.
Who inspires you guys, Sébastien Chabal, Beckam, Comic-book guy? Post Pics!
Chuck Schuldiner, guitarist of bands Death and Control Denied, was my main inspiration for growing my hair out. He was (and still is, years later) my favorite guitarist.
For me it was two people: James Hetfield of Metallica circa the Black album and Duncan Macleod as played by Adrian Paul on the TV series Highlander.
It was me. As I had short hair for a few years and I decided to see what it was like with longhair :-)
Cheers,
John.B
Interesting way of looking at it! I hear what you're saying!
Good Stuff.
Ed Roland, the vocalist of the first wave post-grunge band COLLECTIVE SOUL. In the mid 90s they have very long hair. I have the same type of hair as Ed, THICK & WAVY. I'm also a very very big fan of their music. Concert Video link below. :-)
Collective Soul - Shine [Live 1994]
Ah yes the perfect Curtis Stigers coiffeur :-)
It was mainly just me being me but this just Added to it
fugitive,
Ah this thread again. One of my favorites. Historical figures in history books as well as late 60s early 70s rock stars were my inspiration. Here's a picture of Shawn Phillips. American 60s,
70s folk rocker who is still sporting a tail and performing to this day.

Mine may be the most off the wall, and I guess it's just a quirk, but starting years ago I've had a recurring "lucid dream" when I'm half awake where these apparently indigenous people in a desert are strongly gesturing at me with their faces and arms. After a number of times I realized that the gestures seem to say that they desperately want me to come with them. So one time in that halfway sleep, I found that I could walk into the dream and try to follow them. What happens then is that the whole scene dissolves, and I get this very pleasant buzz that lasts a while. A nice free high. I like to have the dream happen.
Anyway, after seeing these people over and over again, I decided I liked long hair and that I should never cut it again. Later on I put some study into trying to figure out the dream. I don't know who these people are, and I can't figure out the gender of individuals in it. But whatever the case, it's a positive little personal experience, and now I have long hair for as long as it lasts.
My first inspiration was Manny Puig, an expert on predatory animals appeared often in Jackass and Wildboyz. But then I got inspired also by longhairs I was seeing around. Now I have a lot more inspirations, included some members of this board. :)

No, not going to post a pic of the Highlander. :D
I was originally interested in growing my hair long before I ever saw this movie, but in recent times when I decided to grow it again and keep it long from this day forward, my inspiration and hair-idol is Brad Pitt, specifically from Interview with the Vampire. If I could have any hair on this planet, this would be it.
The color, texture, thickness, and everything else about his hair in this movie is perfection in my eyes. Mine's not nearly as thick as his but hopefully someday the overall look can be close (except I'm going longer! :D )
Edward North: I, too was quite taken with Brad's hair. I thought it was the perfect "look". Eric
This movie def inspired me to grow my hair long! Brandon Lee looks awesome
For me, Randy Rhoads, the original guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne.
(he died in 1982 in a plane crash.)
Not only did he inspire me to pick up a guitar, but I always liked his hair, and like many of my favourite rock stars, he inspired me to grow my hair long. Randy Rhoads has always been my favourite heavy metal guitarist.
Luke.
Orignally it was a mix of a lot of different metal musicians, Conan, and wrestlers. Lately, my inspiration for continuing to grow my hair longer and longer has been Lawrence Roberts of Novembers Doom. Here's a pic of his epic hair.
Hi Garth,
I'm sure Larry would be chuffed to hear that. I had dinner with Paul when I was over on the road trip. Have you heard the new album yet?
Cheers,
John.B
I really like the new Novembers Doom, Into Night's Requiem Infernal. I've only had a chance to hear a few songs off Paul's other band, These Are They's new album. I liked what I heard. I've ordered Who Linger, and should be getting it in the mail soon. That's really cool that you know the guys in the band, they are by far my favorite death/doom band.
Not really any single inspiration, but rather an "instinctive" choice for the natural look of long hair. Let's just say "it just grew on me" :-)
I have had long or longish hair most of life except for early childhood and a 5 year period from 1999-2004. I will credit the many nice looking long-haired people I see in my day-to-day life, in print/film, and and online for my decision to regrow my hair in 2004.
While on the subject, I just recently scanned some old family photos into digital format. Here's a "through the years" collection of pictures of my hair over time.
The KLH Model 21 FM table radio above my head in the 1968 photo appears with me again in the 2008 photo :-)

Not everyone looks so great in a mullet, but yours was awesome, and looked great on you. If they come back, you must be the poster guy!
Thanks Benny!
Yeah - I've gotten quite a few compliments on that mullet at that time I've had it.

Frazetta's Conan is one of my longhaired inspirations.
Paul
Same here. Frazetta is an outstanding artist and his Conan works are some of my favorite.
I liked Mortal Kombat just so badly (Shang Tsung being my favorite) :-)
The ones that keep me focused on how I'd like mine to look would be the Rimmerfors brothers of the Swedish Folk Metal Band Fejd. Also, Marco and Tuomas from Nightwish are another good choice for me. In comic books I really liked when DC gave Aquaman the long mane and beard, too bad it didn't last. Also I've always enjoyed Thor. But, probably in my opinion, Native Americans have the most beautiful long hair.
As you know the fall collection of YSL had given me a great inspiration. Most of the models in this show had long hair, the long hair fitted very well with the wonderful clothes. It was a seventies style and as everybody know long hair was in during the seventies. From then, I was very interested in long hairs and I find it very exciting to become a longhair!!
I had many but R.W.was one of them.
Awesome thread. Hey all it's been a while since I've posted...been busy with work, graduating college, moving into an apartment..etc. I HAVE howeever read every single post along the way; I just havn't been posting myself. I hope to be more active in the next few weeks, especially since I'm long due for an update. I'm nearing lower back length at the moment.
When I was younger, my inspiration was Kurt Cobain (like many young dudes). However, it's progressed to Alexander Kaschte from Industrial/Black Metal band Samsas Traum who has VERY similar hair to me, though of a more generous length. He has one of the best manes Ive ever seen.
Hope all is well with everyone!

Good to hear from you and glad everything is well.
Never knew who inspired me, at least not one person in particulair.
But Kurt Cobain is a good one, I think he might have inspired me as well.
I finally let my hair grow when a friend who had moved away came back to the same school I was in during my 9th grade year of highschool.
Another inspiration, besides Danny Cecati, is Herman Li.
Oh dear Herman is touring this week and I won't be watching them!
Well, those of you that have read some of my latest posts know my story. Born into long hair, hippiedom, metalhead, and counterculture.
Now it's purely to have longer hair than everybody. I've seen more of my friends cut it (one just did over the weekend and he realized it was impuslive and wants it back. Wont throw out the ponytail). My heart sinks a little every time and makes me more determined to not go down that path.
Then theres this board which inspired me to
a) go to terminal
b) try as many styles as possible
Also I love the comments, good and bad. Had it in a bun w/ chopsticks today. Girls liked it, most guys didn't care and some guys hated it. I'm just so interested in why my hair can actually make a guy mad.
Sure beats me. Either they have precious little in life to think about, or they are jealous.
