Hi Yall. Its Dougboy. I have not written in a long time due to having a hectic work schedule.
I am taking the time to write about a really bad hair experience and wanted to warn others about it as well.
I had run out of my normal hair care junk and I was on a budget. So I bought Pantene for long hair (for people growing long hair) as it is supposed to protect against breakage. I bought the conditioner as well. Considering I only shampoo once a week but condition more, I thought it would be a cheap purchase. Well friends I made a horrible mistake. I would not suggest people use this stuff.
I posted here about feeling as though my awkward stage hair was looking ratty and rough feeling. I was going to post a picture but did not have the time. I could not explain why my hair was just Breaking off like splinters. I noticed much more shedding than I normally do. I also noticed that my hair was looking really frizzy. Then upon closer inspection, it was all breakage.
I rarely comb my hair except with either my fingers, or my thumb wide, wood tooth comb. I never had this issue before with anything. My roommate commented on the texture of my hair. That it looked dry, brittle, and gross looking. Which he was right about, as it looked dull.
So I tested it. I took a strand. Pulled slightly and watched it snap the end off. I could not figure out what the issue was, until my friend came over. He is a hair professional. He used my washroom and saw the Pantene line. He advised me that it was the stuff that was causing the issues. I never thought about it before to be honest. P and G products should be good. So I sort of took it at face value. Like he was gonna try and convince me to buy the really expensive stuff. So I continued using it for a little, until finally, I would touch it, and it felt like wax.
Long story short. Its a rough product on the hair. Coats the hair in silicone (all shampoos and conditioners have silicone) but after some research it sounds like this is common.
So I thought I would warn people.
I have never had this issue before (Use usually baby shampoo and conditioner which I am going back to by the way)
The Breakage is very bad now!
Hi Dougboy,
Thanks for the update and I hope you are not working too hard.
I've had myself and stopped using Pantene a while ago. I know others use it here and they may or may not agree. I tend to use a mixture of things and rotate them around so the hair don't get used to anything. But all have different sorts of hair and regimes that work.
Cheers,
John.B
Working like crazy actually.
Only giving the warning because I have filtered through these boards and follow the expert advice. the right oils, the right brooming techniques, no blow drying, diet (not a vitamin junkie) and proper protection.
I have listened much to Carols advice as well as others.
I thought it was my baseball cap...which I love and so I stopped wearing it. After little to no change, and more and more damage. Ie clumps of hair in my hands when in the shower, I thought I was either losing my hair, or was sick.
Then I noticed it was all broken hair.
Results may vary from people to people, but it is the only answer.
Take care all.
As one wise man says here.
Keep it growing.
I've used Pantene for years and my hair was wonderful, felt smooth and shiny (must be the silicone) it rarely tangled and breakage was minimal.
Guess what works for some doesn't work fot all so the best one can do is try new things and see what works.
I was going to post a picture but it's Wednesday.
Oh hell I'll post one anyway.
Kevin
Might be the type I am using. It's for Long hair. Mine is wavey and somewhat course and thick. Yours looks great though. No doubt about that.
What a lovely shine, so it does work for some!
And yes it's Wednesday allday!!!
Awesome ponytail Kevin! Lovin' the colour, can't wait till my hair will get that color, someday. XP
And I agree, a shampoo can't have such effect on people...or it might...on some...I don't know, I never had a similiar problem.

I should have clarified. It's not the Shampoo. I used it once. It was the conditioner. It's the build up that it caused. The Shampoo would not be in the equasion at this point.
My experience is that I can use a product for awhile, then all of a sudden it doesn't like my hair anymore so then I switch off to another brand.I've done this for years and trust me I've been a long hair for a long, long time.I've never figured out why but I do know that rotation of shampoo and conditioner has worked for me.So buy something different and see if your hair reacts positively.

Actually not all shampoos and conditioners have silicones. Many do, in varying amounts, but there are plenty that don't. Anyway, the problem is probably that you weren't washing off the silicone buildup with clarifying shampoo. There's nothing inherently wrong with silicones, but you have to strip them off your hair on occasion (depending on how many you use), or they'll coat your hair and they can lock out moisture and make it dry and brittle.
So, I went into a hair and beauty shop. Cause frankly I need something to undo some of this really bad damage, and my oils are not doing a thing.
The woman asked me what was going on. I explained to her. She said it looked like a chemical burn or deturgant burn occured on my hair. She asked me how much I straighten my hair and if I use a heat protector.
I advised her I air dry my hair, oil it with Jojoba and use no heat or product other than a touch of spray gel (recent to hold down the broken stuff)
She asked me what I do to wash my hair. I explained I used to use baby shampoo. She said that was ok. She then asked about conditioner and I told her what brand.
She advised me that it contains relaxers in it. Relaxers to smooth hair, and some dryer hair types will break off under relaxers.
She never tried to sell me anything. She just gave mer her advice, and suggested I go back to my old routine and maybe heat my oil for a little. So I felt more confident.
Either way,
Hopefully I can fix it.
Olive Oil and heat...here I come!
I'm sorry to hear you've been having problems.
I've been using Pantene Repair and Protect for a few weeks now, but I haven't had any problems.
Like some of the other guys, I rotate my shampoo and conditioner every few weeks. About the only thing that's constant in my haircare regime is the jojoba oil.
