Hey,
I've looked at this site off and on for a number of years, but never posted.
I'm now 24 years old. It has been my dream to let my hair grown out for many, many years. Probably at least since I saw Jason David Frank's (he played Tommy Oliver on Power Rangers) grow out. However, it was never really an option up through high school, since my family is very insistent on haircuts. Then college came, and I moved out, first to the dorm and then I found roommates with an apartment (now a house). So, I've had my family out of my hair to a point.
I've tried letting it grow several times. The first time, it was looking pretty good I managed to let it grow for about 9 months. I was in the dorm at the time, and part of what gave me leverage was that I was also doing two plays that spring, "Oklahoma!" and "The Merry Wives of Windsor" -- the directors of both encouraged the guys to let their hair go wild. :P But, somewhere between the performance of the musical and the Shakespeare, I made the mistake of accidentally using the Pantene volumizing shampoo while at my mom's for the weekend. It worked. Very well. My thick red hair showed its true nature as a very dense, shiny, silky mass. In other words, it looked wonderful, but with its newfound volume, it looked embarrassingly feminine. I looked like a Pantene ad lol. So, my grandma was then able to talk me into cutting it. Unfortunatley I ended up with a stylist in training and I got whacked. I then looked like I was in 5th grade again. I really wasn't happy, and neither was my Shakespeare director.
Since then, I've had little growing spells, and I always end up cutting it. Either I was in a play which required a cut (graduated theatre student here), or I caved into family, or I just got tired of looking at it.
But... This summer I made a commitment to try again and stick with it. My last major cut was in late June, 2009. It was a la Daniel Radcliffe on the cover of Details magazine (Google it, you'll find the cover easily). I did have a very slight trim in early August 2009, but that has been the last time scissors have touched my hair, and it will be for quite a while.
I haven't really decided on my goal length yet. I'm debating between "just past the shoulders" and "mid-back."
I'll try to make some pictures, but in the meantime I can tell you that my bangs reach the tip of my nose, and the back of my hair reaches the top of a t-shirt collar. The sides reach the bottom of my ears.
I think that covers my introduction. I look forward to posting more.

Welcome to the board and we look forward to seeing pics when you get time. Your last trim in August (3 months ago) means you have had about 1 and a half inches of growth. Hopefully you succeed at staying away from the scissors or as we've told many here you'll never have long hair, or it will take a very very long time.

To Ryan B.: Yes, it was a nice wordplay :P
To Kevin C.: 1 and a half inches is probably about right... it feels like a little more, but that may be just because it was such a small trim (I was impressed). But yes, scissors are not my friend any more. I recently got on with a new job, and they don't seem to have a problem with long hair (an older gentleman in the building has a pony tail), so that is a plus.
Here's to growing!
Oh boy... the harassment has begun lol. I went to visit with my mom and grandparents yesterday. Up until then, they hadn't really said anything about my hair. There might have been one mention of a haircut which I said no to, and it was left at that. But yesterday... I guess it has finally gotten just long enough to drive them crazy. Mom and grandma just wouldn't let it go. But its my hair, I make the decisions about it. They are just going to have to deal with it. I'm just glad I don't live there any more, or they would drive me nuts. :P

I cant believe I haven't seen this quote in other people's messages about this problem, it's a nice little play on words.
Or did I just miss it? heh
