What can i do. My parents are letting me grow my hair out till im 16 unless i get a job before that. They think that having long hair on a job interview is going to make it hard to get accepted. And they think that the person doing the interview will see me as a bum or a trouble maker. What can I tell them, If i get it cutt i know that i will not be myself and my identity will be gone, i tryed to explaine this to them but they just said I'd better get a job. What can I do, im screwed. I had this conversation beofore with my dad and i said if it does happen and they make me get my hair cutt i told him i was going to just take whatever punishment they would give. But he came back at me by saying he would just hold me down and cutt it. If worst comes to worst and this happens can I like some how file asult or abuse or somthing, I said Id tell the police if he did it to me and he said that they wouldent be able to do anything because hes my parent and hes like owns me or somthing like that, You must really be thinking my dad is some kinda ragging alcholic or somthing like that but he really aint, he just cares for me and wants me to get a job and have a better life then he did. So dont be saying anything about how bad my dad is or somthing because you dont really know him.
Sorry about the other message. I clicked by mistake.
What kind of job are you looking for? Do you live in a very conservative area? I don't think it's necessarily so hard to get a job with long hair. Just make sure your hair is neat and nice looking, and looks well taken care of. Depending on what your hair is like, you might have to have it styled in some way so you can keep the length and have it look good, and you may have to spend time styling it yourself, but you should be able to avoid cutting it short.
If there's a nearby college or university, that might be a good place to look for a job. Colleges are generally very tolerant and care only about how well suited you are for the job.
As annoying as it may sound, telemarketing is a great choice for long-hairs. The pay is highly competitive (as a high-school senior, I make around 4 times what a pizza delivery boy makes), and they are generally very lenient on hair (I wear my curly hair about 6 inches above my waist, and have grown a long (5-6") full beard). They're also usually VERY willing to hire students. Just something to think about.
Sorry about the double post!

But what happens when we start having PicturePhones® or VideoPhones® as in the Jetsons?
Interesting point! :)
In my experience as a "trained sales representative", those who generally contribute to telemarketers won't be getting either of those anytime soon.
Im 15, there is no colleges to go to near bye, they are more like talking about little jobs like working at Walgreens andother near by jobs like burgerking and grociery stores
Around here in New England it's not hard to get jobs like that with long hair. Although not common, it's not unusual to see, for instance, a cashier or even a manager at Walgreens or CVS who is a guy with ponytail.
First, I am sorry that you dad took the strong armed approach. You very likely scared him. You are growing up, and having control over you is more and more difficult to do. Parents, in general, have not learned yet that we do not have to control our children. It's a slow lesson. YOu also illustrate the very point made here so often: hair length control is what adults have done and do to boys, and men who are required to wear their hair a certain way are socially always boys.
Honestly, Jack, maybe you should just get your dad's hair cut, get the job and thank him for caring for you in his own way. And then, in about four years, when you are 20 and hopefully on your own, in school and/or working, you can do with your hair what you wish, because you will be a man. And then, having long hair won't be about fighting with your dad so that you can grow up. It will be about you--just being you.

Actually it aint about going against my parents at all, they never brought this up to me until like last week, i just thought that they didnt care, or maybe they didnt think that i was seriously going to do it. I dont know but I cant just cutt my hair, its a part of me. I dont understand it, Like 2 years ago i would get those hair cutts wich wear usually just buzz cutts,i cant take this no more, I keep it well cleaned and everything. People say im a fairly good looking guy but my parents say that the hair on me aint right for the work field
Would it help to tell them about how many of us are working guys with jobs and long hair? I am a teacher. I teach Latin. I have shoulder length hair, and I wear it, very neatly and cleanly, in a ponytail to work each day. No hassles. What about other guys? Can you give some basic details to Jack of the kind of work you do and the length of your hair?
Robert
Find a job where they accept your long hair, like landscaping, or other mainternance type work. I think a grocery would hire you if you keep the hair in a tail. Give it a try or talk to other guys with long hair who have jobs. Good luck. TomS
Pre-empt your parents intentions by getting a job on your own, with your long hair. Don't even tell them about it until after you have the job.
Tell your Dad that he won't see his grandchildren if he forces an unwanted haircut on you. When you get married, don't invite your parents to the wedding. By the way, what does your Mom say about this? If she presses you to get an unwanted haircut, tell her that equity is a two way street, not a one way street for women only. Equity, everything from A-Z, including H (hair). As far as getting a job with long hair, I got one as a teenager with long hair, I got one after graduating from college with long hair, and I am a respected Registered Professsional Engineer (And I'm not making this up). Yes, there are some places that won't let you work with long hair, but there are some places that WILL. Tell your Dad to get out of the stoneages. Your 16 years old and VERY CAPABLE of making your own decisions. One more thing, tell your Dad that I resent comparing long haired guys to being bums or troublemakers. I'm not either: I'm a college educated man with a professional career and all this with long hair. Tell your Dad there are bums and troublemakers with short hair also; Adolf Hitler, Timothy McVeigh, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Robert Hansen (Mr. I spy for the Soviet Union), the Enron crooks (executives), politicians, and the 19 terrorists who hijacked four planes and killed many innocent American people on 9/11/2001 to name a few. Do you want to look like Timothy McVeigh? I wouldn't!!!!! Good luck!!!!!
Don't forget the 20th terrorist who would have been on United 93 who could have killed many more innocent American people last 9/11.
Your right!!!! How about Ferdenand Melosivich (sorry about the spelling), Mr. Ethnic Cleansing and all other short haired facists who exert their dominance by insensitively bulling others (I HATE people like this). Also, I found another tidbit of information for this young long haired fellow to pass on: Abe Lincoln said: "No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent".
No! You mean Ferdinand Marcos and Slobodan Milosevic. Did You Know that males used to get forced haircuts in repressive regimes such as in Ferdinand Marco's Phillipines, Park Chung Hee's South Korea, and the South Viet-Namese Government?
I stand corrected. I must admit that I didn't do my homework on my previous post. But, my point is obvious. That each of these facists had short hair!!! Thanks!!!!!
Hey, Osama looks like he has long hair! He has a dirty beard at least...if he was in the US I'll bet he'd be one of those nasty bikers who beat their wives and things, not to offend nice bikers who don't do that :P
This is not good advice. Instructing him to throw a temper tantrum because he can't make the fashion statement of his choice is immature. Many parents don't allow their children to do things they see as extreme, this includes tattoos, piercings, dying hair pink, etc. And they do it because they believe their children can't see the big picture, or at least their version of it. If he actually did what you're saying it would only prove he's not capable of making his own decisions.
By the way, you mean equality, not equity. You don't sound like you have a college education to me. Stop telling him to be so hard on his mom. What's your problem? Did your mother not breastfeed you or something?

Keep the hair, apply for a job. Just go to the interview in a collared shirt, nice pants, shined shoes, and a hair-tie. Some may be predjudiced still, but if you demonstrate you are mature, people will see it, and you'll get hired.
Good luck,
The Rev
It shouldn't be a problem to get a job at Walgreens or a grocery store with long hair. I've seen guys at grocery stores with long hair and piercings all over their face (not that there's anything wrong with that). You gotta make sure your hair looks nice and clean though. I think some of the reason why people think of men with long hair they way they do is because many long haired men don't take care of their hair at all. I think you could put it in a "half ponytail" if you know what I mean, and make sure it looks great. Also, if you have facial hair, I would consider shaving that off. Men with long hair only and no beard look a lot less "hippy-like" and I think would therefore have a much better chance of getting a job.
Good luck!
