After 6 weeks or so working in the field.....poor old White Tail looks a bit ragged huh??
Hair care regime has been mostly just tie it back and stuff it under a hard hat !! The job has just come to a merciful end, so I can return to retirement mode and perhaps wash and shampoo the old mop !!
That is $300,000 worth of geologic core samples I am sitting on !!
Walter,
Enjoy your retirement!
peace, jonalbear
"...Enjoy your retirement!..."
Thanks...I love what I do, but weeks and weeks of 24/7 takes its toll....My next contract is not until February...so I get to stay at home, play with my toys and take lots of naps until then.
I wish I could feel for you! I need a vacay!!!
I'll take an extra nap in your name....Ha!
hope you get your break soon.
Walter
But did you find the oil?
or is the oil just in your hair.
Kevin
"...But did you find the oil?..."
Gasp ! We were drilling inside the Death Valley National Park....drill for oil ! Eco-terrorists would have been after me.....we drilled a scientific monitor well for water quality studies. Water in the desert is much more valuable than oil or gold....
Oh my god there's water in death Valley!!!
Don't tell anyone cause if Los Angeles hears about it they'll
want it all, then those eco terrorist will wish it were oil.
Kevin
"...Oh my god there's water in Death Valley!!!..."
LOTS
"...Don't tell anyone cause if Los Angeles hears about it they'll want it all, then those eco terrorist will wish it were oil..."
CAN'T TOUCH IT....IT'S IN A NATIONAL PARK HA!!
Well you know how all fake they are in LA, the probably when even give it a thought. As they will be TOO busy seeing how many dinner dates they can turn down! Been there twice never again.
Cheers,
John.B
Sounds like an interesting job. Hiring any carpenters? Lol
Seriously, how cold does it get and where was the picture taken?
Paul
"...Seriously, how cold does it get and where was the picture taken?..."
The photo is at the gates to my ranch in Nevada....the job was in the Funeral Mountains overlooking Death Valley.....it was 15 at my place this morning....
Oh cool. I was in Death Vally in '84 with my army unit. Awe inspiring place.
Paul
Hey Walter, looks like very interesting work you get involved in.Where on earth do you apply for that kind of job?Well I give you credit putting up with those cold temps and being away from home so long.At least you protected your hair while on the job as I do the same with baseball cap.Now get some rest and don't overwork yourself my friend as you are retired.....Right!lol
Mark
Mark;
I have been known to hire runners with their own 4 X 4 for odd jobs.....next contract is in Iowa....you, Opal and your jeep ready??
I have a 4x4 F350 and a 24ft gooseneck flatbed.Are you talking about hotshot type stuff?Used to drive a longhaul flatbed.
Arrick
That's completely awesome to me! Soon I will get to experience the hair care joys of the field too, hope you enjoyed it for the most part!

...wait a minute...
oops
"...Soon I will get to experience the hair care joys of the field too..."
What will you be doing??
Trick with the hair is just protect it and just ignore it. No one looks pretty when working in the elements...
Congratulations on your journey. I, too am approaching retirement, and look forward to the day when I'll have more time to myself. Forturately, the hair will look as good as new with a little care.
Eric
"...I, too am approaching retirement, and look forward to the day when I'll have more time to myself..."
I have been fortunate to have the best of both worlds....when I retired ("was retired", thanks to Sen. Harry Reid) I hung out my "consultant flag". Lots of high $$$ work in my field....so I get to work very hard in the field (read fun) for weeks or months at a time, the go home to play with my toys until the next project.....in these hard time, I appreciate the fortunate position I am in.
Best of Luck in your retirement.
Walter
Hi Walter,
This is a great picture, thank you for sharing, and such an interesting field you work in. I had no idea that you were away from home for such long periods of time, or that you were still working! As you know, I retired a year ago, and could not be happier!
Take care,
David
....you have Tammy !
I just have a bunch of roughnecks ! Ha !
Man, I am envious! I love that part of the country.
And you are looking marvelous too!
Bruce
Bruce
You flatter me....actually for my age, I hold up to this lifestyle pretty well and it makes me feel young.
Great photo Walter. Your hair's still growing, looking good!
Thanks Jason;
As you know, I have declared that my hair is the slowest growing in the MLHH community. Despite the fact that I am past the time of terminal length and that my hair is thinning (read MPB), it does still seem to be growing. I will have to do a proper update and put it to the members.
Take Care (shoveling snow??)
Walter
Hey Walter! :-)
Poor old(??????) Walter is looking great these days to my eyes and your mane is blowing so nicely in the wind. Great photo and thanks so much for posting this.
Justin~
ps: Any "Gold" samples mixed-in? LOL
"...ps: Any "Gold" samples mixed-in? LOL..."
Why do you suppose there are 2 1/2 tons of geological samples at my gate ??? Ha!
I don't see anything wrong with being a Scruffy Tail. but now you can relax and recover.
Mike
...I can now revert to my other persona....NapCat
Nice pic, Walter! Your hair looks nice.
I hope your job went well.
-Andrea
Thanks Andrea;
Yes the project was very successful, giving us vital information to hydrological studies in the region.
While it is nice to have hair neat and in place, I personally prefer to see hair that is in motion and a bit mussed by nature.
I don't think I'd call it ragged, I think you still have a few good miles left on you. What kind of samples were you collecting? If you hit a vein of platinum you can share the wealth with the board haha.
"...a vein of platinum you can share the wealth..."
Actually this is part of a regional water study...and we were verifying flow paths, water quantity and quality. Lots of water under the desert....
--------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully that water does not get depleted. I have heard that ancient desert aquifers are being drained faster than the water is being replaced. Be sure to manage it well.
I also know of the location of 9.6E15 tonnes of platnum and 1.6E15 tonnes of gold. That is enough to cover every square meter of dry land 3 meters deep in platnum and 55 centimeters deep in gold. I will let you try to guess where it is.
Scott
"...I have heard that ancient desert aquifers are being drained faster than the water is being replaced. Be sure to manage it well..."
Exactly why we are studying this....
If you are talking about refined metals, there are several depositories globally. If you are talking about unmined ore, Antarctica, Russia and northern Canada are targets waiting for technology to make extraction feasible.
------------------------------------------------------
Actually it is right under your feet about 6000 kilometers down. Probably 99.9% of the gold and platinum are at the core of the earth.
Scott
Just think after all that scorching sun there is conditioner at the end of the tunnel...HA!
Cheers,
John.B
"...there is conditioner at the end of the tunnel..."
Indeed....a good shampoo, deep condition with olive oil, rinse with a commercial conditioner and groom with jojoba wax.
Haha, ragged, no. Looks fine to me. Those are some expensive rocks though! Nice to be able to come out of retirement and do a job and then return to retirement. Hope all is well with you.
Matt B.
"...Nice to be able to come out of retirement and do a job and then return to retirement. Hope all is well with you..."
Thanks Matt....yes I am ever so grateful for the lifestyle I am blessed with, especially during these hard times.
Walter
Breakfast out: $7
Tank of gas: $50
Truckload of geological core samples: $300,000
Poor old, looks a bit ragged, but cute as a button, Walter White Tail: priceless
You've earned a break - Time to enjoy!
- Oren
Hello poor little mineral rich White Tail!
To work very hard for a month and a half doing what you thoroughly enjoy doing and having plenty of rest time in between jobs and being well paid for it! How many tons of samples is in that $300,000 lot and how deep did you have to drill for it? What type of minerals are they?
Ah to be back at home sweet home ranch again !
Have a great 2010.
Kind regards,
Duncan
"...To work very hard for a month and a half doing what you thoroughly enjoy doing and having plenty of rest time in between jobs and being well paid for it!..."
And I am fully grateful for that lifestyle, especially at my age....but there have been a lot of hard times to get here.
"...How many tons of samples is in that $300,000 lot and how deep did you have to drill for it?..."
2 1/2 tons of core samples...of geologic interest only, no commercial value or significant mineralization...they are on the way to a government core library for archiving. We only drilled to ~1300' studying water quality....will go deeper next year.
"...Ah to be back at home sweet home ranch again !..."
you becha'.....ZZZZzzzzz naptime
"...Have a great 2010.
Kind regards,
Duncan..."
Thank You and the same to you.
Walter
Hey there Walter, what a great picture, your hair looks fuller and the wild look is of course in my opinion very cool. Thats an interesting field of work you are in there (or were). Thanks for updating us!!
Cheers Dave
...the wild NuttiDave look. Ha !
Actually, wind, dust, sand, drilling mud, grease and a little hydraulic oil gives it that fuller look ! Ha !
Thanks for the compliments
Walter
I don't think you look ragged at all. Your hair still looks great.
You flatter me !!
Walter
