I'm new to this site, although I've been growing my hair for at least 3 years. I did so once before as well, but I dyed it black and it was impossible to care for properly and too much work so I cut it off and donated it to "Locks of Love" to be made into a wig for a child cancer patient. My hair is long again, but not as long as I'd like and it seems to be stuck at terminal length. However, after reading this site I'm full of ideas on how to better care for my hair and possibly get it to grow longer. I have been using harsh shampoos and chemicals on it which kept it clean but probably damaged as well as filled it with tangles. I use thick, fabric hair ties without metal clips, so I did that right. But I've always had trouble with getting my hair caught in the knot of a bandana when I put one on and felt like an idiot when I read that it should be tied on backward then repositioned. My first thought was, "Why didn't I think of that?" Well, I hope to get my hair to grow longer, but time will tell. My hair is very wavy, which is suprising considering my American Indian herritage. Anyone have any thoughts on how to keep it from getting tangled during sleep?
Greetings, Strong Bear!
Your hair looks awesome. To keep it from getting tangled during sleep, you could do what's called a "segmented ponytail". It's just putting hair ties down the entire length of your hair instead of just at your neck. Most people put them about a hand's width apart but you can experiment with that. Personally I do a loose braid at night, you could try that too.
Good luck!

Arguably the most effective way to keep hair from tangling is a segmented ponytail (multiple hair ties down the length of the hair)
Multiple hair ties will protect your hair from damage while sleeping. Do them at 3 to 4 inch intervals.

That looks like a pretty simple solution. I think I'll try this one first. I've tried braiding it a few times but couldn't manage to get it to cooperate, probably because it's so wavy.
Hey Michael,
Welcome to the site! I'm new to the site also, only 4 months out growing my hair. Your hair looks awesome, keep it growing if possible.
Kenny
Welcome to the board Michael! You have some great hair.
You can't tell by me but we have a lot of Cherokee in our family. I've seen a lot of American Indians with wavy hair but I never was clear if was supposed to be homogeneously straight or not. I've been told by some that a lot of nations did have waves but of course it could have been passed down from the early Spaniards.
As far as morning tangles go I just brush mine when I get up. It don't seem to get too tangled at night so I can't help you out there.

I htink your hair looks great. Hmmm terminal length? well I hae felt the same way about mione for awhile now and its about the sam or a bit longer then yours. My thought s that its a good length and I ahve also played with different things on my hair asfar a shampoo and whenI wash and conditioner and seem to have found the right combo for me that keeps things nice. So I would say let it go and see how far it gets, it may take a while. Best of luck!
Welcome Michael, nice mane!
I've slept with loose hair, ponytail, segmented tail, and braided. Braided, by far, is the best way for tangle free hair, for me at least. And with your wavy hair, you wouldn't even notice a little extra wave in the morn.
