Decided to make 2010 the years I finally crack down and make happen a New Years resolution on something I have been wanting to do for several years now. Am finally getting myself motivated to learn bass guitar. What I'd like is some advice as to what's the best type for a beginner that wont break the bank in purchasing. Was talking with a good frined that's the drummer for a band and he told me that cracking down , practicing hard he'll make sure I get a chance to play bass for their band (thought that was very cool). Advice and criticism will be most appreciated. I figure hell, I'm 45, not young by any means but perhaps you can still teach an old dog a new trick, so here I go. I've thought about checking out pawn shops also as a possible beginner bass.
All have a great start to 2010.
Charlie
Hey Charlie.
That's awesome that you want to learn bass! I've been playing guitar for about 4 years now, and its pretty awesome! I would give anything to play in a rock band. You should definitely get your friend to let you play in his band.
As far as advice for choosing a bass, I think you'll just know the one you want when you see it. When I was picking out my electric guitar, I didn't know what I wanted. I just saw it hanging there on the music store wall and I knew that was the one. You'll find one you like and is at a decent price.
Anyways, good luck with the bass and rock on!!
Luke.
Hey Luke, yeah man you could've knocked me over with a feather when Jason told me that. I understand perfectly the pull of "the one". Will keep a lookiout and will keep updates as they happen.
Great new years resolution, I'm going to learn playing the guitar this year. Good luck!
You too Vincent. Once we all learn, maybe the MLHH will start our own band. The name "MLH and the Hyperboards" comes to mind.

My Dad took up the acoutical guitar at age 86 and was playing in a church within a year.
I built and am learning to play a hammered dulcimer in my 60's
Good Luck....young pup !!

acoutical = acoustical
...typing on low levels of caffeine again !!
Building a dulcimer, how cool. Thanks for the encouragement. I understood acoustical... I'm one of the worst when it comes to spelling correctly.

I had a wonderful time building the beast....struggling a bit learning to play it like the kid in the link below....
Enjoy !!

Hey Walter,
I'm very impressed at they work you did on that dulcimer.I can't even imagine the hours you put into making it and I bet it will sound awesome like the one in that vid:)I always regret never fully being able to master a musical instrument as my last attempt was electric guitar.Sometimes I wonder if that's a talent you are just simply born with and not one that can be learned.Anyway I'd love to see a youtube of you playing that as wouldn't that be cool:)Thanks for sharing you interest Walter.Cheers
Mark
Walter...
What an amazing instrument you have built, absolutely beautiful! Can't wait to one day hear you play it.
Peace,
Kenny
That's truly amazing Walter. As a musician, building an real and playable instrument is something I have to do one day :)
I admit that I didn't know the dulcimer, but the guy in the video is fantastic, and I like the sound of the instrument. Have fun with it !

High!
A friend of mine, Dr. Thomas Ogger (a scholar of Islamic science, Iranic philology and musical anthropology) plays the Persian santur! Unfortunately, there are no examples of his music on the Internet...
See you in Khyberspace!

Wow I'm impressed, looks like a fine piece of craftsmanship.
There's more to White Tail than just rocks and deserts.

That's beautiful Walter!
I hope you enjoy playing it as much you did building it.

Hey Charlie, pretty awesome resolution! I started playing guitar a few yrs ago and ill tell ya, I wish I would have bought one when I was 15 like I wanted too! I love it. Its weird cuz I really don't know how much talent is involved. I think certain areas of it require "talent" like a built in sense of timing and being able to write music, but as far as learning to play, its really just work and dedication. A lot of repetition. More often than not, Ill hear a melody or a riff or something in my head and Ill go to pick up my guitar "just for a minute". Next thing I know, 4 hrs just passed by! Its great! Only thing I have working against me really is that I now live in a different state from where I grew up, so I don't have all my musician friends to jam with (makes a difference).
As far as choosing your instrument, when choosing mine, my theory was this...I wanted to get something reasonably priced, but still a good guitar. I knew it was something I wanted to do and that I would stick with, so I didn't mind shelling out a few extra bucks for quality (it sucks playing on a poorly made instrument). I picked up a Les Paul standard (Epi) and liked the feel of it, played a cpl different ones and settled on this one with an ebony finish. There was one with a tobbacco burst finish which I liked the looks of better, but the ebony one just felt better to me. Well good luck man, I hope you find something good! \m/

Plan on buying the bass this week, so figure could kill 2 birds with one stone and post pics of the both of us. Appreciate the comments and encouragement. I agree would have liked to have started earlier.
