Hey thought a kinda fun topic would be in hand for this friday. Just wondering why you grew your hair long or are trying to grow it long. Personally i'm growing it long because i'v been playing guitar most of my life and i mostly listen bands from the 80's. I guess it rubbed off on me. I fall into the rock musician longhairer i guess :)
i grew mine to be different then everyone at my school and that no guy had long hair at my school
Ive just always wanted it. Plus Shawn Michaels is fast becoming my idol.
A mix of 2 things....1) i was too lazy to get my hair cut and 2) i really like Marilyn Manson's hair from the Antichrist Superstar album/tour, and his hair previous to it, it looked really good long...so im growing my hair out...
and i guess i am because my girlfriend likes it long...
because of my sexual identity problem, I believe I was meant to be a women instead of the silly accident of nature that made me a man.
I was going for a more elegant look; a look I saw in the movie, "Interview with the Vampire." Brad Pitt has THE quintessential long-hair look in this film. Nothing but class!

My reason is that I've always felt like a longhair. Ever since I was little. I hated getting haircuts. Guess part of the reason why was that my father wasn't usually around during the day and didn't try to make himself a part of my growing up in that way, but I've ALWAYS preferred long hair to short hair.
That's why I have mixed emotions about the latest style that I've got. It's short in the back, so doesn't make a good ponytail, but at the same time, everything's one length, and I still have about 1/2" longer than chin-length (when pulled straight) on my bangs. So, when I move out, I'll just start growing again. Won't stop until I feel the ends of my hair brushing against my rear end when I tilt my head back.

which reminds me . . . yesterday i was able to tilt my head back far enough so that my hair touched my rear. obviously, my hair is not as long as the length you were refering to (i recently posted my picture) so i had to do some contortion, but it is fun every once in a while to stretch and see what is possible. :) plus, hair feels really nice brushing across my back.
Don't rub it in... :/
-J (who's currently got collar length in the back, from having mid-back length, and not 100% happy with the change)
it's alright! if you just put your head waaaaaaay back your hair will go down to mid back. :)
Hehe
smarty!
LOL
Three words. Rock And Roll.
For me it is because I have wanted to have long hair ever since I was about 5 years old. It just feels right for me. I remember fighting my parents who wanted me to cut it when I was about 15 and instead of going to the barber going to a friend's house and cutting about half an inch off instead.
Hmmm, interesting one. There were three reasons for me: an issue of style, one of admiration, and one of subconscious rebellion. Stylistically, I felt bangs were a pain in the ass (spiking, parting with gel, whatnot), and at the same time I didnt like short hair on myself anyway. Also, my coach of 2 years who was like a best friend and second father to me had long hair for most of that time period, and I suppose it was a form of admiration for me to grow my hair out. I started growing mine the first time (this is my 3rd) after her cut his, since I didnt want to directly copy. But he was one of my reasons. I really miss having him around, he helped keep me sane. Anyway, the third was the typical teenage rebellion. I didnt realize it for a while, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that I wanted control of myself, and my hair was a first step. I wanted some freedom, self-possession. Being a teenager has been terrible for me, I want to pick up and move on, but how can I do that without being responsible for everything about me? The hair was one of my feeble first steps. Unfortunately I dont think I will be moving out until January.....9 more months....
I believe those were my reasons for growing my hair out. This is my 3rd time now in the last, oh, 2 1/2 years. First time my bangs were grown out but I was tired of the brassy blonde color I had died my hair so I cut it off completely down to a buzzcut and grew from that. Then in December, after 2 trims prior, I cut my hair for our school musical which I ended up quitting anyway, so that was a complete waste. So here I am 4 months later. At least my haircut wasnt extremely short in Dec., it was one of those parted in the middle deals (no bowl cut, of course). So its growing back, and I'm glad...

At school in the late 1960s. And it ain't changed yet!

I grew my hair long because I didn't want to follow the herd mentality.
I don't want to look like Timothy McVeigh, Adolf Hitler, or ANY member of the white supremacist group Aryan Nations, who held a brief rally marking Adolf Hitler's birthday in York, PA this past Saturday (They all had short haircuts or shaved heads). Besides, I'd rather look like Jesus Christ!!!!!
I recently heard an account of someone's first meeting with Adolf Hitler when he was an angry young man formulating his Nazi ideas. He was described as having greasy shoulder-length black hair. Never mind!
Cheers! Roller
Eeehee! Teenage rebellion of course, to start with...all the sheep at school have horrible short hair and I'm unique.
Also, the vast majority of my idols have long hair...video game characters (especially Sephiroth, Vincent, and Reno from Final Fantasy VII, and Kefka and Edgar from Final Fantasy VI) as well as anime characters who always look great with long hair and the ever-present breeze that comes up at will :P
And I've wanted long hair since I was 15. I'm 18 now, and got it cut a wee bit near my birthday (in August) so it was trimmed in July...not a lot, but I couldn't tie it back or anything. Now I have chin-length in front (guaranteed to drive you MAD) and past collar length in back, which I tie back when I'm sleeping and alone but not around people just yet. I should get a bandanna or something, some sort of hippie thingamabob. Heh.
DEATH TO CONFORMITY!
Always wondered what it would look like, so when I turned 35, I decided to see before it was too late. Several fits and starts, but now I'm 40, it's mid back, and I think it looks great!! Wish I'd done it 25 years ago.
P.S. Mom always made me cut it when I was a teen, but now she loves it. Never lose hope :)
I'm just starting to grow my hair out. It's a professional career move. I want to sing opera and a lot of the roles I sing are set a couple hundred years ago and require long hair. The wigs in Europe are terrible and who knows who's worn them before! To get a wig made professionally it can cost anywhere between $300-$2000 depending on the length and quality and style. Who wants to wear a wig?!!
Just my wacky reason!

It was first because of Metal music, then I really liked it, it`s really killer to have long hair, it kinda made me a better individual.
Then also for religion (Prophets had long hair)
I`m a guitarist as well.
And also because it`s now my identity, it`s revenge to show all these criticising persons that I`m still here with my long hair.
Take care
I've always been into Metal and wrestling. I've always thought long hair was cool. Plus, my dream is to be a wrestler one day; all these new wrestlers are short-hairs. Sucks!

Had shaved head for years and never thought I would grow my hair long.
Liked to buzz-cut it every Friday. A guy at work challenged me (am 53) and that was it. His hair was just over the collar and has been getting a bit shorter with each cut. I started growing it long. Everyone bugged me at work for the first year. It is now a year and a half and hardly ever a peep from anyone. I can't tell you how much I like long hair. It is certainly more work, but more fun and enjoyment, too. Seems like you never have a bad hair day with a buzz cut but I always have a bad hair day when it is long but worth it. Long hair always looks cool hanging below a bicycle helmet, motorcycle helmet or even a baseball cap, even a toque. I am one of only two people in the entire seven story office tower with long hair. The other guy has it in pony tail at work. I just tuck it back behind the ears with a little hair spray and let it hang over the shoulders.
It began way back in the 60's with admiration. The early Beatle's-style "long" hair back then simply looked beautiful and I wanted to have long hair too and I ran into opposition from parents, schools and so on and I only really started keeping long hair over the last 10 years.
However, while it might seem to be inspired by rebellion, my main love of long hair is mainly aesthetic and sexual, which is why I still like to be around other long hairs and if I'm lucky, to hug and cuddle them, and if I'm extra lucky to whip their butt over tight jeans while they try NOT TO wince, squirm or cry out.
Now that I think of it, I always had longer hair than other guys in elementary school. In fact, I think I was the guy with the longest hair of the whole school. So its a part of me... It is my destiny to be a longhair. But in high school I cut it short most of the time. I don't know why, but when I was in high school I didnt care about long hair. So what if I look like a woman? It doesnt bother me and only an idiot could think I am a woman after hearing my deep voice.
I've been growing my hair since last Oct. It will now tie back into a 4" tail but I'll keep it loose until it's quite a bit longer. I've had longish hair at times, short at others. I'm now 47, and still have all my hair, with just a few greys. Why am I growing it?
1) Because I feel like it, I think it suits me.
2) Because it's coming back in fashion. I have a photo of myself at 19 and, give or take a few wrinkles I now look like I did then!
3) It's a men's rights issue. No man has the power to compel me to get my hair cut. I think women tend to like, or at least tolerate, long hair on men, it's other men that have the problem with it.
4) As a boy, I always envied girls being allowed to have long hair. I didn't want to be a girl, I just hated being made to have short hair. It seemed a kind of humiliation. I felt this way even before Beatlemania!
My reason for growing my hair long has changed in some respects, but stayed the same in others, during the almost two years I have been growing it. Most recent one is that I don't want to be mistaken for someone who thinks the status quo (the mindless exploitation of natural resources, screw other lifeforms, etc.) is acceptable.

I've only been growing it for about 8 months now (I'm 16, BTW), so nothing significant really... my bangs touch just below my nose when I pull them out straight. Anyways, I'm growing my hair long for 3 reasons...
1) Heavy metal! I love the unkept look that a lot of death metallists have... it sort of displays a "I don't give a f**k!" attitude...
2) Class/style... Interview With The Vampire... 'nuff said...
3) Women love it... =)
My hair is a dirty blonde colour, natural... and I'm proud to say that I don't have a single split end on my whole head. Last time I went to the stylist's, I was told that my hair is in PERFECT condition and it was the healthiest hair she'd ever seen.
