Hello. I want a verry long braid.
Sorta like in Avatar, but I wanted mine before that.
What is the easiest way to do a long braid if you are the only one there to do it?
Is there perhaps a product or machine you could buy? like you could insert three sections of your hair into the machine, turn it on, and it would braid it for you?
Also, if you have a long braid, how often do you need to take it out? would it be possible to keep it braided even when in the shower?
What other problems or anything else in general should I know about a long braid.
Thank you for your time.
Since my hair is still fairly short, I have no experience in this. However, I have watched a lot of this lady's videos:

Braiding long hair is definitely possible, even without help.
As far as braiding machines... The only thing like this I ever remember seeing was an accessory for a Pocahontas doll, back when the Disney movie was new. Probably not big enough for the large braid you have in mind; the commercial as I recall only showed the young girls making small braids in their hair. So such a thing does exist, if in small scale. But I'm not sure I would trust a rotating machine with my hair. Just learn to do it yourself, or have someone help you.
As for caring for braids and more detailed tips, I shall defer to the members here who actually have long hair.

Hi, good idea. I have a very long braid. ;)
You can braid it by yourself. Just take your hair behind your shoulders, part your hair into 3 sections via the dent of the back of your skull and then start braiding it from behind until you have some turns and then take it over the shoulder to the front and braid the pattern to its end.
It's easy to learn, you don't need to effort money.
I open my braid each day or each two days, comb, oil and braid again.
There are no problems - try to part the sections properly else you'll get an headache soon because some little strands have the weight of the braid.
You can part the sections better when your hair is oily or oiled, braid is shinier then, too.
Don't braid too strong, cause it can cause damage. Try not to sleep on your braid, causes damage, too.
Try to avoid getting your ends into the belt or trousers.
No prob - regards
No need for a machine! Practice on a section toward the front of your head. That'll help you get the technique down. Then try it with your eyes closed. That'll teach your fingers what to do. Then progress to the back and imagine that you can "see" what you're doing back there and proceed slowly. You may mess up a time a two, but be patient. Practice, practice and more practice.
Good luck!

(ps, when you get good enough, you won't have to worry how long to keep it in...you'll be able to undo and redo pretty quickly.)
I should probibly clarify. I am planning on doing a fraid where all the hair is pulled directly back first. From what I know, doing a braid yourself without parting it on the side can be kinda a pain?
Do it yourself. It may be easier to learn if you start from a ponytail (clipped or elastic'ed).
It depends on how "fuzzy" you want it to be. Oiling will tend to reduce the fuzziness, if you prefer that look. When I braid, it is usually for a day or less. Wash time is when you take it out and detangle/comb it. If you leave it in, it can take a very long time for the braid to dry...
It can be a(n accidental) weapon when swung.
Actually, I really love that idea.
lol
Some of you more dedicate3d long hairs out there may think me lazy or something, but what would be ideal if I could get it to start at the nape of my neck and have the braid be so tightly bound that I could just leave it that way for as long as possible.....
Perhaps I should retitle my topic to "How long can you keep a braid in without it coming undone?"
Divide in three. Bring alternate sides in to the middle. Repeat.
That's it. Any further info is just a gloss. Gets quicker with practice. Trust me.
