Hi again,
Believe it or not, I still have at least double the amount of pics of longhairs from that SF Haight St. Fair back in '04 (just didn't want to overload everybody all at once - LOL)....
This pic is a prime example of how to photograph a longhair from the front who has his mane tied back in a tail. When I initially asked his permission to take his pic, I originally saw him from the back, tapping him on the shoulder to ask him my question. He couldn't have been nicer and more polite and agreeable to have his pic taken; but when I looked through the lens of my camera to take the shot, I noticed immediately one "small" problem: from the front, he looked exactly like any ordinary short-haired guy lloked (because his hair was tied back so neatly, and his tail was flowing down his BACK, which was out of sight when I was trying to take the pic in front.
I don't have a clue HOW i asked him to toss his ponytail over his shoulder in front (after all, this was over 5 years ago that I took this picture), -- all I remember is that somehow I must have said the magic words to get him to do just that... If I hadn't, I'd have to say to everyone right now the following:
"See this cool-looking guy here that looks like a short-hair? Well, he's NOT a short-hair! No, really -- his ponytail is quite long, almost to his waist... You should have seen it, if you had been there, you'd believe me... No, really, I ain't kiddin'! No, really..."
The moral of this story, if you're a photographer of longhairs: just ASK, and chances are, you will get whatever it is that might make the picture better!
The moral of this story IF YOU ARE THE LONGHAIR BEING PHOTOGRAPHED: if you want to look back at pics of your longhaired days, especially someday if/when you're old & gray and/or bald and/or short-haired... whenever smiling directly into the camera, that ponytail flowing nicely down your back sure isn't very visible unless you toss it forward over your shoulder!!!

Ken,we are going to have to assign you to a new position on the mlhh crew. And you'll be the first in consideration and that is the official longhair photogragher:)You certainly have the knack for getting guys to submit to photos and also where to place their beautiful manes such as this gentleman pictured here.So are you up to the task?????????LOL.We could even have you travel around to all the registered users and retake their avatars to mlhh standards. And we'll even pay you double of what you got as an ordinary mod!Now isn't that tempting? You can even quit your day job:)Cheers my friend.....
Mark
Are you SERIOUS? You mean to tell me that MLHH will actually pay me DOUBLE the old rate I got when I used to be on the Moderating Team??? WOW, now that's what I call a deal too good to refuse (LOL)!!
(Hmmmm... let's see, zero X 2 = ?....)
Hey Mark, on a more personal note...
My apologies that I forgot to get back to you after you left that recent cell message over the weekend. I've just been overly focussed on helping Even get over the hump of having this awful Swine Flu (I even took last week off from work to be here at home to make him homemade soups and stuff).
Anyway, let's try to chat over the phone this coming weekend, I'm thinking that probably Thurs. evening might actually work the best this weekend, because this month I'm teaching a Swing dance class on Sunday evenings (which often has been our usual time that works well to chat in the past). If Thurs. doesn't work for you, then maybe Sat. evening? Sats. are not my best, because often tired after a long workday; but, in any case. looking forward to talking soon!

Hehe. I tend to favor doing that as well whenever I have it in a ponytail.
Granted, I do it alone in front of the mirror, but alas.
I sure wish there were more 'longhair photographers' around.
I knew Steve G. (RIP) used to take pics on Venice Beach, CA, etc.
Granted, not sure if he ever got consent to take their pics cause most of them, you could tell, were very... voyeuristic. LOL
There needs to be a longhair photographer in each state darn it! LOL.
I keep checking 'modeling' boards to see if they seek longhairs, but either you have to agree to get it cut, or you have to look like you've never eaten in your life. LOL
I await more pics.
Thanks, ATP, for your kind comments!
Funny thing is, I haven't been back to SF's Haight Street Fair since that one year that I took all those pictures in June of '04. Weird, huh? (LOL)
The Haight St. Fair is the PERFECT setting to take a lot of longhair pics. There are several reasons for this, including the following:
1) Historically speaking, San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district was THE place to be during the late 1960s. It's where the "Summer of Love" happened. It's where all the hippies hung out!
2) Any street fair, especially the ones in SF, tend to have very much a "party-time" feel to it. People are relaxed. They want to have fun, and they want to do a lot of "people watching!"
3) The Haight Street Fair in particular, more than any other street fair I know of, tends to bring out an incredible number of longhair... OMG, they just seem to come out of the woodwork or something! It's as if for one day, on that street fair day every June, it actually looks like a time machine has taken the planet back to the '60s!
Haight St. on a "regular" day tends to have more longhairs in that neighborhood than in other SF neighborhoods; but, for the most part, it's not to the same spectacular degree as on that Haight St. Fair day.
Where else is a good place to photograph longhairs? I guess I don't really know... Beaches? Biker gatherings? Truck stops? Political rallies? (OMG.... I'm starting to stereotype my own people - LOL!!)

Just ask and I can always get on a plane! Mind with all these extra security checks by the "department for false alarms", it might take longer!
Cheers,
John.B
ROFL!!! That's a good one, John, "department of false alarms" - LOL!!
I forgot to mention about you as a fabulous longhair photographer. Taking pics at Metal concerts are your specialty, right?? I've seen some of your work, which is way beyond my ability... You need to post more of your pics here!
Take care, John, and I hope 2010 is a great year for you!!
- Ken
Thanks Ken and that makes as a nice recommendation. I don't just do bands I do people as well.
Cheers,
John.B
