Hello.
Idealy, I would like to be big and muscled, Tattooed, bearded, and with a long braid.
Now.... how hard will it be for me to get a job as a high school history teacher?
How hard will it be with the long hair.... I suspect it would be fairly hard at schools that have a dress code forbidding long hair on males.
But what about schools without such a dress code? are they allowed to deny me employment because of my hair or appearance?
What about the possibility of the hiring principal seeing my long hair, not saying anything about it, but not hiring me because of it? I mean..... how could you prove it was the hair?
Also, what if I were to have a braid long enough to tuck in my shirt? If he didnt notice, and hire me, what then? Can they request I cut it after the fact to set a good example or something like that?
Zenjamin,
First I would like to commend you for wanting to be a teacher. I just graduated and will hopefully be certified within the next couple of months.
I wanted to let you know that there are many schools here in Alabama that have the "hair cut" policy. But there are a few that don't. I completed some observations at one of the schools without the haircut policy. There was a student teacher there, male, that had long hair. He kept it in a ponytail. He had also been offered a job to teach at that school. They didn't mind his hair at all.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't think it would matter in the schools without the policy, but you won't know until you try. Good luck with everything, and if I find out information on it, I'll let you know.

There was a long haired male music teacher at the elementary school my kids went to here in Maryland. There aren't any hair policies for students or teachers in this state (although I suppose there might be private schools with restrictions).
You've got some great goals, both personally and professionally. Be yourself and fill your life with people (including employers) who appreciate it. This is the only path you won't regret.

Back when I went to high school a few years ago they had a few male teachers with long hair. I think most competent schools will allow it as long as you have the credentials.
I am a high school educator. My hair is mid-back, as is the hair of 3 other colleagues in my bldg. The principal of our rival school has a ponytail. Such things are not even newsworthy anymore here on the East Coast.
Benny,
What state do you live in??

I am also a HS history teacher. I had a ponytail for many years and cut it off a few year ago. I'm in the process of growing it back. Honestly, no one cares. I suspect you need short hair to get the job, but once in, it's no big deal.
