Hey Hairy People,
Just to keep up your inspiration and encouragement to grow your hair long, longer, or loooooooongest, here's another longhair pic from the Haight St. Fair of '04 that I've never posted before...
Out of all the guys that I approached that day when asking their permission to take their pic, this is the only one that asked me to e-mail him his image. Since neither one of us had a pen or piece of paper on us, I tried my best to memorize the e-mail address that he told me. Alas, when I got home and e-mailed him, the e-mail address bounced back at me...
I hope he visits MLHH, although I have no idea if he does. In any case, I found his hair to be an inspiration to me, and he's certainly a great example of how a guy with mega-long hair can look hands-down AWESOME!!!
I hope he still has it long; but it was over 5 years ago when I took this pic....
For my New Year's resolution, I think I need to go back to the Haight St. Fair again this year. A lapse of 6 years by the time the month of June, 2010 comes around, not attending this event since 2004 is just too long a time!

Here's a young longhair that was quite memorable, because at the time I approached him, I didn't fully realize that the 3 or 4 short-haired guys near him were apparently friends of his that must have been hangin' around together at the fair. When I told him that I was taking photos of longhairs that day, and then asked him if he would mind if I took his pic, IMMEDIATELY following my question, his short-haired friends ducked down and hurriedly scattered away -- almost as if they were bowing in subservience to the one and only longhair in their group!
In the background, you can still see one of this guy's short-haired friends that didn't quite make it out of my camera's way before I clicked the shutter...
- Ken
Actually, a closer inspection shows something behind the neck of the guy munching on the pizza right behind your subject. It appears he's got some kind of mullet/ponytail thing going on.
That's very observant Jim as I just noticed it too after rechecking
the image.Maybe that's why he stayed around for the pic!lol. Funny
how you miss things at first glance.

His hair is gorgeous, Ken. Hopefully he kept it long. I would like to attend the fair with you, if possible.
Scott
Hey Scott,
Sure, by all means -- sounds good to me! We can plan a longhair meet-up 6 months in advance (LOL)!! Hopefully Bill & Larry will join us also (I believe that Bill at least has been to that fair several years in a row now).
I need to find out WHICH weekend in June that this Haight Street Fair takes place, though. I usually work weekends nowadays; but if I request that Sunday off well in advance, no problem.
Maybe some of the MLHH members from out-of-town or even out-of-state might even decide to make it this year, who knows!
- Ken
Would be nice Ken but airfares are kind of pricey for that time of year and hopefully I have a visitor from the USA coming over for our regular jaunt to Germany in July. But I'm sure some people from out of state will be able to make it.
In recent years it has been the second Sunday in June, but those who put it on are quite flaky when it comes to picking a date or publicizing it. About half the years they have no web site up at all and the other half they have info from the previous year still on line until just before the event. Maybe "quite flaky" isn't the right mental state. Maybe it is "way too stoned". (I can imagine them answering, "Is it possible to be TOO stoned?")
Everyone finds out about the date anyway, though, at least enough to pack the street, which is all the people they probably want.
The fair is legend for having big name performers show up as a surprise on stage, sometimes with their performance listed in the events under an impromptu fake name, and sometimes not listed at all. The bigger-name acts tend to be at the west end of the fair, down by Golden Gate Park. They have another stage with music down at the east end of the fair near Masonic Street, and the usual crafts and food booths, and lots of interesting people to see, in between.
Bill
I hope I'm not boring you all by sharing these pics right now, as well as hope you'll forgive me for not posting these in 2004, when i SHOULD have done so!!!
Anyway, here's 2 guys looking like they're enjoying the street fair. Again, as I said last week when I first started posting these pics from my iphoto library, the men in these photos are total strangers to me (except when stated otherwise, like of Bill & Larry, or of the 5 from our brunch group). I guess I was just in "one of those moods" to make it my "assignment" that day to take lots of pics of any longhairs that were willing to pose for my camera -- NOT the kind of thing I normally do "everyday" (LOL)!!
I have quite a few more shots that I could still share; but, I don't want to get annoying here, so will only post just a few now....
In any case, ENJOY!!
- Ken
Besides ASKING THEIR PERMISSION to take their pic, the other "secret" for success in finding a stranger who's willing to give me their mug shot is to look around and see who at the street fair looks pretty relaxed and "approachable". Don't bother anybody that looks grumpy, in too much of a hurry, has a nasty scowl on their face, or is too busy and/or looking too serious at trying to do a job of some kind... ONLY ask a longhair who looks cool as a cucumber, and appears very relaxed...
It looks like this guy, for example, has a beer in his hand and is enjoying soaking up the sun.... Hey, a perfect candidate for probably saying "yes" to my camera (as indeed he DID)!!!!
- Ken
Hi Ken,
Hey, you certainly are not boring me with all these fun pics of longhairs from so long ago.My one hope is that they still ARE longhairs. You never know but if these guys are like me they will be wearing their hair long until their last days on this planet:)I'm well on my way to that point myself.lol.
That looks like a cool event to attend and they attendees make it even more so.Thanks for posting these great pics and as far as I'm concerned ....Keep 'em coming my friend!Cheers
Mark
That dude has some awesome hair.
And that girl behind him has an awesome behind. Hehe.
Paul
Only you!! lol
Some great photos you have taken at the fair. Hope you get many more amazing snaps at your attendance this year.
It's pretty cool, like guys having long hair, it's almost like some sort of secret club with unwritten memberships. If you tried to take photos of short haired strangers I'm sure that their reactions would be a lot less friendly and open.
