Hi Hairy People,
(I think I stole that above greeting from jonalbear... or, maybe it was originally from someone else -- I can't remember!)
Anyway, I have a few questions about turbans, if anyone here knows enough about them to give me an answer or 2 (CORRECT answers, that is - LOL - since made-up answers won't help me much)... Here they are:
Q #1 - Has anybody here ever worn a turban (or at least CONSIDERED wearing a turban)?
Q #2 - Does anybody know a good place to buy a turban? Here in SF there's an Indian supply store (as in, East Indian, rather than Native American), selling various spices like curries, etc., as well as some clothing; but I'm feeling a bit shy about just walking in there asking too many questions (LOL)....
Q #3 - Does anyone here know where I can learn about how to put on a turban?
Q #4 - I have other questions, but they're more late night ramblings... Do you really want to hear them?
Q #5 - If I end up liking turbans on myself, does that mean I'll have to change my MLHH handle from "Urban Cowboy" to "Turban Cowboy"?
Q #6 - Why do fools fall in love?
Q #7 - Why do birds sing so gay?
Q #8 - Will you still love me tomorrow?
Q #9 - What's that song about May?
... I can sure tell it's waaay past my bedtime now!!
- Ken
PS - Yes, this pic of this turbaned guy was also taken at the same '04 Hairght St. Fair where I took those other pics. I think his turban looks cool as can be -- and a nice way to protect long hair, too!
I lived in the Middle East for a couple of years and tried to wear one for protection from the heat....and to look cool !
It is really just a long piece of fabric which can be purchased anywhere. Also there are a scad of websites that sell them..including pre-wrapped versions. Just Google "Men's turbans"
I had someone do it for me...like braids, it is an art that takes a while to learn....again, many websites show the technique.
Absolutely !!!
Or...."Urbanturbanboy" ??
That is what makes them fools....
Obvious...they are from San Francisco !!
We will ALWAYS love you Ken !!
See the link below
YUP! And by answering, you can tell my caffeine level is waaay high !!
The May Song
Hi Walter,
Thanks for your wonderful answers to all of my bizarre questions, the above answer of yours being my favorite!
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken
PS - That song about May was a totally different song than what was going through my mind; but hey, thanks for the link to hear that one, too!
Q #1 - Has anybody here ever worn a turban (or at least CONSIDERED wearing a turban)?
I wrap my wet hair in a towel after washing, does that count?
Q #2 - Does anybody know a good place to buy a turban? Here in SF there's an Indian supply store (as in, East Indian, rather than Native American), selling various spices like curries,
etc., as well as some clothing; but I'm feeling a bit shy about just walking in there asking too many questions (LOL)....
You shy? I'm speechless. and that rarely happens.
Q #3 - Does anyone here know where I can learn about how to put on a turban?
You would have to consult that wise old oracle known as Google.
Q #4 - I have other questions, but they're more late night ramblings... Do you really want to hear them?
No but we've come this far.
Q #5 - If I end up liking turbans on myself, does that mean I'll have to change my MLHH handle from "Urban Cowboy" to "Turban Cowboy"?
Maybe The Urban Turban. Yuk! I should quit now but I can't stop myself.
Q #6 - Why do fools fall in love?
Because the Russian wife import business isn't what it used to be.
Q #7 - Why do birds sing so gay?
Thinking of Hitchcock and then the spoof by Mel Brooks.
Q #8 - Will you still love me tomorrow?
You're assuming we love you today......
Of course we doooo!
Q #9 - What's that song about May?
Why don't you come up and see me some time? oops wrong May.
I do the same thing, Kevin; but unfortunately that's not a turban... so you don't get the million $$$ prize I was planning to give you if you got it right (LOL)!!
LOL, I'm HONORED to have brought on that "problem" for you!
Yes, you are SO correct on that one -- I totally agree!!!!
You mean "Young Frankenstein"?? I've seen that movie at least 7 times -- it's one of my all-time favorites!!!!!!!
ROFL, yes, I totally deserved that one, now didn't I?!!
Thanks, Kevin. Now every time I wrap a big bath towel around my head, I will forever think of your version of a "turban" (LOL)
- Ken
Glad you enjoyed it these are fun posts.
The Mel Brooks film I was thinking of is "high anxiety"
he does a rip off of the birds.

The Birds...fitting scene for SF
Ken, No not my greeting but a cool one. May yes a nice though. How about(bad pun intended) "It May as Well be Spring".
peace, jonalbear
Hi jonalbear,
I could have sworn that my, "Hi Hairy People" greeting was originally one of yours. Oh, well, I guess it was somebody else I stole it from then (LOL)....
In any case, thanks for the "It May as Well Be Spring" suggestion! The only problem with that is that I was trying to rhyme with, "Why do birds sing so GAY?" My real problem, though, is: I need to be better disciplined at not staying up so late at night, especially posting anything on the board here that late... On nights like that, my eyes start crossing over and then I get a bit "punchy!"
- Ken
Maybe it has already been suggested and I don't know the title of the song but the lyrics go "While strolling through the park one day. In the merry merry month of May." hope this helps.
peace, jonalbear
/* As an initiated Sikh, I wore a turban from 1997-2009. */
/* Many East Indian stores that sell fabric and clothing
sell "voile," the type of light cotton cloth that is used
to tie turbans. It is lighter than any type of cotton cloth
that you can get in an American fabric store. Ask for
"turban cloth." The merchant may think you are a convert
to Sikhism. */
/* Go to any Sikh temple (Gurdwara) and ask for help or
instruction. They will be more than glad to teach you.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, there are Gurdwaras located

find instructions online at web sites and in books. There are
many different styles to tie. */
/* One can be a cowboy and still wear a turban. No need to
change how the world knows you! */
/* That is the whole point why observant Sikhs wear turbans.
Uncut long hair is considered to be a divine gift (Kesh),
and the turban is worn to protect and honor this divine gift. */
Good luck, Ken!
Hey Sugarcane,
Thanks so very much for all the excellent information, Sugarcane! You look really good in that pic with your own turban on, too!!
Yes, the longer I want to grow my hair, the more I can understand the logic and need to protect it. Approximately 90% of the time I either go to work or go out in public for any reason, I usually have my hair in a bun these days -- and when not in a bun, it's in a braid or segmented ponytail... in other words, even though I love love LOVE to have my hair loose & down whenever possible, once it got to around waist-length, it just became obvious that the more extreme length meant becoming more aware of not letting wind, nearby machinery, fire (I cook all day in front of a stove, for example), or any other potential danger or damaging factor harm my mane. Tangles alone can be hell enough trying to get out at the end of a windy day; so, I can totally understand why turbans are Heaven-sent!
Thanks again for the informative reply!!
- Ken
I worked with a Sikh at Barnes & Noble for a few months, he answered my questions and showed me how to tie a turban (I wore one for a while when my dreadlocks were at their longest, it took the strain off the scalp)
As I mentioned above, yes :) I wore one for several months. . .it is a nice contrast to feeling the weight of the hair pulling against scalp (it compresses the skull slightly, and got rid of a headache I hadn't realized I'd been having!)
I am not familiar with any where around here (rural East TX, lol) but up in Oregon there's some East Indian shops that sell clothing and I've seen turbans in there. . .they were quite helpful in answering my questions (though I tried to get as many answers online beforehand so I wasn't just annoying them)
http://www.sikhnet.com/pages/tyingturbans Helped me greatly. I usually tied mine as a double patti nok style.
Sure!
I'd vote "yes" on that one :D
Because everyone falls in love, and after all they have the same genetic drive as anyone.
Either a) because they're gay
or
b) they're trying to throw off the creationists
Well, erm. . .
Born in 1983, so I'm not sure what you're talking about :p
Hi Mr. "Ball" Guy,
Thanks so much for your informative reply! No need to worry about any of the questions after #3, though, as I was posting while up too late, as it was way past my bedtime by the time I rambled on and on with those extra questions -- which were mostly titles and/or lines from old rock & roll songs from the '50s & '60s (LOL).... I was a bit "punchy" by then, and just being silly!

Hey Ron,
Thanks so much for that YouTube video link, Ron -- I'm looking forward to watching and learning from it (I'll probably check it out later tonight)!
Hope you are off to a great New Year so-far, and wishing you a wonderful and furry new decade!
