Hello all!
Im starting to think about this question again. To trim or not to trim? I understand that its going to hamper your goal length and put you behind schedule but is it better in the long run? Will the split ends travel all the way up to the root and then cause extremely stringy ratty hair? Or would it be better to get to the length you want and then trim a bit to clean everything up and all that?
Hey Darkmetal.
In my opinion, it would be better to wait until you've reached your goal length to start trimming. You'll be maintaining your length as well as cleaning up the ends. You'll only impede progress by trimming now.
If you haven't read Bill Choisser's article On Being a Longhair, you definitely should. If I remember correctly, it says somewhere that trimming split ends can actually encourage more splits in the future. So I think you should wait a while before trimming.
Hope that helps, and keep it growing!!
Luke.
Split ends do NOT know how to pack up a suit case, hop on a train or plane, and "travel" all the way up to your hair roots... in fact, they don't even know how to walk! They only split a teensy tiny bit (an inch or 2 at the very most). You'd have to regularly be beating up your hair pretty damn badly in order for a split end to go all the way to your scalp -- in which case, probably your neighbors would have already called in the authorities because of hearing all the screaming coming out of your house!
As far as trimming goes, trim if you like; but don't if you don't like. Just make sure you go to a very reputable salon if you choose the trimming option, preferably to someone who already has a longhair following (meaning, this can be long-haired women, since long-haired men are harder to find locally probably)
Good luck with your decision (just put away the boxing gloves now, and maybe sign up for an "Anger Management" course - LOL)!!

Ken I get a kick out of your posts, you and PaulKMF of course LMAO!
Just let it grow man, it's ok to "dust" if you will once a year or so until you've reached your goal. Then trim from there.
I fully agree with what Ken told you below. You'd have to be extremely rough on your hair to have major splits especially if you are just starting your journey. So just be gentle with your mane and grow it straight through to your desired length. Why slow the journey needlessly by cutting it back when it wants to go way downward my friend.
