...but not so awesome for my mane!
Today I got out of the shower and deep conditioned my hair and ran a wide tooth comb through it and detangled it with my fingers. There seemed to be an unusually large amount of shedding from my hair. The fact that I have not deep conditioned, or even ran a comb through my hair for weeks may have simply caused more dead hair to accumulate, that was ripe to be removed?
Yesterday I did have a party and used some heavy products on my hair(mousse and hair spray). I only occasionally use styling mousse, and the hairspray was done without consent from my sister who likes to interfere and thinks she is always right. I think it might be possible that these products could have dried the hair out and caused more shedding as I combed through the hair. I always use a liberal amount of conditioner when I comb through my hair wet.
Just an observation really, and wondering about the normal shed rate and whether I deep conditioned/combed every day if the shed rate would be significantly lower because of the higher frequency and less dead hair accumulation. I wonder if some of the shedding is happening in real time, as I run the comb though my hair, straight from the roots.
Do not worry, for this happens to me, too. At times, the amount of hair I shed after a shower could supply a full beard for Gandalf. It sounds normal since you hadn't deep conditioned and combed your hair for weeks, as you said, so it is nothing to panic over.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha that was awesome! (Gandalf reference)

It is most likely mainly because you had not combed for weeks, I try to brush (I prefer boar bristle brush, at least the normal brushes around my hair just DO NOT work well with my hair, hit every small tangle =[) my hair every 2 days or so, and I fingercomb my hair every day to keep it from getting tangled. My hair is shoulder length and slightly wavy
