My truck's transmission died on me so I've been spending time underneath fixing it. As a result, I've discovered a new long hair hazard. Three times my hair got caught under the wheels of the creeper I was using, and once it got stuck in the wheel itself. That may not sound too bad, but remember that I was laying on the creeper while I was under a truck. I had no way of getting up or shifting my weight to get my hair out. I had to get help from my dad, whose garage we were using. He ended up having to use a metal pipe as a lever to lift the wheel off the floor so I could pull my hair out. I'm sure the trauma of being ground between a metal wheel and a concrete floor didn't do my hair much good, not to mention the transmission fluid.
Oh well, I guess I have some damage control to do.
Hi Michael,
I work on cars too as a hobby. Sorry to hear both your incident and your trucks tranny. I would put your hair in an updo or a bun. Not like anyone is going to see it. Don't need to look pretty when your wrenching on something lol!
I've had my fair share of tranny fluid showers. Usually takes me 2 shampoos to get it all out.
O/T Since then, what I do is disconnect the tranny return line going to the cooler. Start the engine, adding fluid continously until you see the new stuff coming out. Reconnect the line and top off from there. More expensive and time consuming this way but you get the fluid out from the torque converter too.
I may try that method. I was wondering if there was a way to get the bad fluid out of the converter.
Are you having the tranny rebuilt?Most transmission shops replace the torque converter with a new one.They take the old one as a core.Just did a tranny in a friends car a couple of months ago.

Actually, I'm rebuilding it myself and upgrading it from a standard 700R4 to a Raptor. I'll replace the torque converter if necessary, but the problem is with the 2-4 band and possibly the sun shell. I'll know more when I get it apart.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune Micheal but if I were working on something like that I'd NEVER wear my hair loose.I actually work in the HVAC industry and my hair is always covered otherwise it would constantly get caught on things and would be quite damaged after awhile.Especially since my hair is waist length protecting it is a must.I wish I didn't have to do this as I'd love to wear my hair out all the time but its just not practical.So my method of choice for work is tailing my hair,pulling the tail up over my head and place a ball cap over it all.Of course tuck in that extra length that is hanging out under the bill of the cap:)Its worked for me for many years this way.Cheers my friend.

Michael;
Thank You for sharing your story...I am always glad when the topic of longhair safety comes up on the Board. So many of us work and play in conditions where we MUST tie, tuck and cover our hair...damage to hair is the least problem when the hazards of our occupations can severely harm us. Let's face it when we are working, no one cares if we are "pretty" or not.
Glad you are OK
