I've been growing my hair now for nine years (can't believe it's been that long already!). For someone my age, that's a loooong time to go without any change in hairstyle.
Last May I decided that it was time for something different. I wanted something drastically different but not something that was too radical that I would become miserable if I didn't like it. I decided on a compromise. I would shave only half of my head.
No regrets at all. It did nothing but confirm for me that short hair is not only boring but also too high maintenance. It has been growing back out ever since.
I think that this awkward stage reaches new heights of awkwardness. For your entertainment:
But, it's not so bad. It's still kind of a cool haircut.
Also, it is quite easily covered up.
Just felt like sharing. :)
That's really a surprising hairstyle. You seem to have really thick hair, so I can't see the truth on the last photo :) The whole style is not too ugly in my opinion, but I hope it will regrow quick.
Just curious, what comments do you get about it now ? :-D

Actually, to this day, people that I have seen on a regular basis--even my roommates--occasionally have a moment of panic when they see me, especially if my hair is tucked up in a bun, because they think that I've cut it again.
I really like the idea of transformation, so I quite like that I have a sort of three-(or more?)in-one hairstyle. It's kind of like the motto of the mullet: business in the front, party in the back.
Your hair is gorgeous and I commend you on maintaining it long for 9 years before you started tinkering with it.Thankfully what you did to change the style a bit didn't totally destroy your hair and I can see your comeback from that is growing in nicely. You are so correct my friend that short hair IS more maintainance that very long hair.I love my longhair and will NEVER go short and you can take that to the bank:)Thanks for sharing you terrific photos.Cheers

"...I decided on a compromise. I would shave only half of my head..."
HA ! Actually, I wholehearted support anyone experimenting with anything that is not illegal, immoral or permanently damaging....that is part of the fun of life. And sharing your hair experience here is part of the purpose of this board.
I am sure you had (shock value) fun when you first did this, but I am delighted that you are letting it grow back out and absolutely surprised at how unnoticeable it is when you style your hair.
Thanks for sharing an unusual story and I look forward to seeing more of your progress.

Very original and I myself think it looks GREAT! Thank you for sharing this with all of us.
My first thought was that the pictures were going to be a disaster, but... I actually think that looks really cool. Seriously. I'm also really surprised at how you can cover it up so well, but even if you don't... I think it looks great.
Happy growing!

I can't believe I'm seeing these photos with my own eyes. It is definitely in the "bizarre" category for a hairstyle that I've never seen, heard about or even thought of before.
You (had)have incredibly long hair and now it is unsymmetrical and just plain wrong(IMO). You must get alot of mixed comments/reactions from people?
Atleast you don't have any regrets, and as long as you can live with your decision, then it's fine.
I wish you all the best with your regrowth and look forward to any future updates. It will surely be an odd experience growing half a head of hair(quite literally!).
Interesting. I have never seen nor heard of anyone wearing half of his hair short and half of his hair long. At least you can experience both short hair and long hair at the same time. I almost always see people wearing their hair at equal length on both sides meaning what a person does to one side, he or she does the same thing to the other side.
