Im new here, but hopefully someone will answer my question.
When the stylist asks "how much?" what do you say or describe to get what you want? Note: i am trying to actively grow my hair, so should i even get maintenence cuts?
I would honestly not bother trimming your hair until it is past shoulder length, it is not a good idea to extend the awkward stage and your hair will not develop many split ends before that point as long as you detangle it regularly (do not force your comb/brush/fingers whatever through a tangle, it will most likely cause breakage) and take other basic precautions to not damage it.
If you were to ask for a cut after achieving shoulder length or longer you probably should only get half an inch or less cut off all around.
Good luck.
Pretty much what Ryan said. I wouldn't worry about it till after the first 2 years or so. Assuming you don't dye, straighten your hair.
I think everyone here would advise NOT to trim for obvious reasons; that it will prolong the growing phase and the resulting awkwardness can be intolerable and make you want to give up.
