I've been using this cheap family sized bottle of silicone free conditioner as a leave-in product for my hair. I like to leave conditioner in my hair because it makes it less dry and clarifies the curls. Last time when I was alot less experienced about hair care I used to do it with cone containing conditioner - definitely not a good idea. Lately I've noticed a few split ends forming on my hair and they're probably not all that bad(maybe even a natural occurance?), but my hair neuroticism makes me consider all the possibilities.
I will list the ingredients and hopefully a knowledgeable member can quell any doubts I have about leaving cone free conditioner in my hair and the 'safety' of it, especially in the long run.
INGREDIENTS : Stearyl Alcohol, Centrimonium, Chloride, Polyquaternium 7, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Fragrance, DMDM Hydantion, Disodium EDTA
Many thanks for the help. :)
Looked up the ingredient
Stearyl alcohol - good, effectively conditions hair unless overdone, only negative effect is potential greasiness of
"overused" whatever that is for each specific person.
cetriumonium chloride - apparently helps your hair to detangle.
Polyquaternium-7 prevents or inhibits the buildup of static electricity and dries to form a thin coating that is absorbed onto the hair shaft. Polyquaternium-7 also helps hair hold its style by inhibiting the hairs ability to absorb moisture.
Hit and miss there, it prevents static electricity but inhibits ability to absorb moisture, but if you feel your hair gets enough out of it it should be fine.
Hydrolyzed collagen - When used in hair preparations, Hydrolyzed Collagen enhances the appearance and feel of hair by increasing hair body, suppleness or sheen. It may also improve the texture of hair that has been damaged physically or by excessive treatment.
DMDM Hydantion - This substance is known to cause cancer. Aside from that, it can also induce skin blisters, skin inflammation or dermatitis, dryness of skin and severe breathing problems. When absorbed in large doses, it can cause cancer while if inhaled, it can induce serious irritation to the eyes, nose and throat.
Many preservatives such as DMDM emit carcinogens which can potentially cause cancer.
Disodium EDTA - Straight forward preservative with no known negative effects, also serves to prevent build up of product in hair/skin.
Amazing what you can find by looking on google eh?
Thanks for the information, Ryan! This is great.
I guess I could have googled it but I thought I might just put it out on here and get people's advice.
In that case then, it appears none of the ingredients or additives of my conditioner are harmful for hair. I feel alot better now. Cheers.
