I've been growing out my hair for quite some time now and it's about shoulder length. My hair is naturally straight. or at least the top and middle are, but the ends of the hair tend to bend outward at odd angles which is completely not the look I want. The curling at the end looks rather like the letter J. Combing has no effect but to accentuate the curls. I'm wondering what causes this and what would the most effective way to avoid this. I've done a bit of research but obviously most of the advice is aimed at women and none of the straightening methods seemed to be permanent. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul, welcome!
I had the same thing happen at that stage. My wife would refer to it as the "That Girl" (Mario Thomas) style.
It is caused from the ends of you hair bumping on your shoulders. There is no permanent fix that I know of other than just letting you hair keep on growing past the "bumping" stage. Once past that point your hair will be back on the straight and narrow.

(By the wat, did I say cutting the curly part will NOT be helpful? It will NOT be helpful! Once your hair regrows, it's "That Girl" all over again!)
Welcome to the club. I've had the same issue since the summer. I had them nipped off just to have the problem arise from the dead. I ignored it for a while, and for the last 3 months I've been using a 3/4" straightener to help keep it "neat".

Welcome to MLHH, Ryan. What is happening is that the ends of your hair are hitting a barrier. It is your shoulders. Your hair cannot grow through your shoulders so it has to bend to grow around them. It is just that simple. Once well past your shoulders it will straighten out again. Been there, done that, many years ago. It is a rite of passage to long hair.

Mine is doing this now. It's your shoulders. It's betting better now though because of the weight and because it's getting longer.
I was sort of tired of looking like a stepford wife as well for a little.
My suggestion. Throw on a light leave in conditioner just at the ends. Mouse can help. I just hate the feeling of it. But it will work
